Hello SDN,

I was curious and found the SDN specialty selector. Took the quiz two or three times trying to vary my answer but still being accurate. The top items on the results were consistent. Anyone have info on how accurate the selector as a preliminary look into specialties?

It accurately predicted the field I'm in (by a mile).

I would say next to zero, though the field that I ultimately decided to go into was in the top 3 of the fields selected for me when I did the survey back in the day. It's really hard to get a sense of a field until you spend some real time with it. It might be good as a way to think about exploring fields you wouldn't otherwise, but short of that I can't imagine that it has much utility.

I guess I will see. I did find the reasons why physicians in my top result liked the field to be surprising. What do you think about the descriptions of why the specialties are liked?

Oh and I was curious if medical schools dislike students who favor a particular field before they see it in medical school?

If you have seen a field, it makes sense to have a reaction (either negative or positive). More important, though, is to be flexible and open minded, because you'll see the specialties from a different POV during med school and residency.

I appreciate that experiential knowledge is vastly different from textbook or observation knowledge. I have seen some in my volunteering and shadowing. But it's only one setting, large teaching hospital, where I am told by the attendings that the environment is very egalitarian inside the hospital as opposed to the general work environment. So there's so much to see.
