 hahah i bet the title shocked you a bit. anyway i was just curious as to why so many american students are choosing to study in ireland when they have some of the best universities in the world. im irish and i find it very amusing to see all this interest in my country's universities when i myself would much rather study in the us?

there's multiple factors, some of which have to do with the US application process. Some have family here they'd like to be closer to. But I think what's increasing is the desire to see something new and experience a different culture (and in the case of Ireland, that means not having to learn another language as well). Just like you want to go somewhere else, the same happens with a lot of us. One of the admins I was speaking to think there's a correlation between this interest and the aftermath of 9/11. I'm not really sure if I believe that one, but there's definitely people who realize they want to see something new.

Also, I think there's an increase in popularity through word of mouth. A small majority of North Americans over here are Canadian - because of difficulties in getting into med school there, more Canadians have heard of studying in Ireland, and know of Irish grads who are successful in gaining a place in a Canadian hospital. Therefore, they equate Irish schools with success in learning medicine and being able to return home.

Each individual has their own reasons for wanting to come here. Just ask them 😉

leorl mentioned some good points...I just want to add that it's human nature to want to experience a change in environment once in a while. On the West Coast, people want to study in the East Coast, and vice versa... With the case of Ireland, it's just another side of the Atlantic Ocean...😉

true, for people like us. But sadly...i've met many many people in the US who've never left their home state and even more sadly do not even feel the desire to see something else.

What is the percentage of Americans that have passports? I've heard 10%?!?!?

Hello, I was wondering where I could find some information regarding admissions for US citizens for medical school in Ireland and the UK. Ive been looking around but I dont think Im looking at the right places (websites)

Thanks

hello everyone. Well, in my case, my family is from Europe, and so we have traveled together all over Eastern, Central and Western Europe. My father hopes to retire in Italy if he has enough money, and I absolutely have always felt torn between the United States and Europe. Culture itself is one major factor for me; also, I feel that I share a similar mindset to that of the Europeans. All together, this would be an amazing experience. However, it also means incurring a significant amount of debt. 😳

Thanks... I was just curious. My first priority is the US & if that doesnt work out Ill probably try the carrib. I still have a lot of time to apply though.
