Out of curiousity.. does anyone here want to be an optometrist.. but has never seen an optometrist before? (for glasses/ contacts?)

Just wondering... because one of the things I might bring up at the interview is that.. I've seen an optometrist almost all my life for my vision problem, and I became very interested at what he was doing.. and i can relate, blahblah

But i was just curious as to.. if anyone wants to be an optometrist.. but has had no personal experiences with one.. and what the underlying reason is?

Hi Chrissy,

I have only had two eye exams that I can recall. One was in 5th grade, and I thought it was The Coolest Experience Ever, mostly because I got to sit in the dark and show off that I had perfect vision! The second one was when I was 21 (6 years ago) and I was not impressed with the doctor, who dilated my eyes and never told me to bring sunglasses or anything like that. I had class afterwards, which was NOT pleasant 😉 I definitely felt like he rushed the appointment, and I haven't seen an eye doc since (blush.) I did not discover I was interested in Optometry until after working as a web designer for 5 years out of college. That career sucked the life out of me for many reasons, and I decided to find a career that matched a specific set of criteria I wanted (human interaction, high quality of life, financial stability, flexibility, etc) and turned to the internet to help me find the right match. I stumbled on Optometry and have been fascinated ever since.... Perhaps I would have considered it earlier if my experience with the more recent doc was positive, but honestly, I was so focused on making a living from my right-brain and my art, I didnt' really consider science careers much after freshman year of college. Now I am just doing the Opt pre-reqs at a community college.

I do not wear glasses or contacts, and I have never regularly seen an eye doctor. I am due for an exam, though, and I plan to go as soon as I move in with my boyfriend, who has vision insurance. I'd like to see a private practice doc at a place where the OD does the entire process of the screening, if possible, but I don't know if I will find that type covered on the vision plan. Since it's been so long since I had an appointment, I'd like to have a lot of time in the office, so I can't pay a premium price out of pocket on a student budget. Because of my lack of respect I've shown my own eyes, I realize I have a LOT of shadowing to do in the next 2 years before I apply! I must say, after observing doctors, I do see the need for at least semi-yearly checkups (whatever every 2 years is...I think that's semi-yearly hehe!) Most patients at one office had been there the prior year, and they almost all needed new prescriptions. Granted, they were all above 50 years old...

I hope this helps! 😀

Hi! Thanks! That is good to know..

Haha, well here in Canada, if you are under 20 or over 65, then you get one free eye exam PER YEAR.

My eyes are BAD. LOL. Im 21 so I am not covered anymore, and even though I have no money, I still have to see my eye doc once a year (out of my own money) or otherwise, I won't be able to see anything!!!!

In one year, my eyes went from -3.5 to -4.75 😱

So I have seen my eye doctor annually, and glasses/contacts have become a big part of my life. (I havent even seen my family physican for almost 3 years!)

Your eyes are definitely better than mine. I am -5.75, and I've only seen my eye doctor every 2 yrs. 😀 😀 😀 😀

I by far have the worst eyes: -8.50 and -5.00 lol

hhaha guys, I have the worst eye sight ever and am in risk of retinal detachment! mine is -15.75 & -12.25 (somewhere around that ballpark range)..and I'm only soon-to-be 23-year old!

It's kind of nice to see others with higher powers in the field lol! As long as we can see fine corrected, we're good! 😀

YIPES! 😱

As a student in Optometry school I can tell you that Optometry students generally have much worse eyes than the general population.

You could use this in an interview but it would not separate you. I would recomend calling a local OD and shadowing them. Bring this up at your interview combined with having seen an OD all your life.

I was working the front desk this summer and a girl in her early 20's came up after her appointment to pay for her new contacts. She was a -8.00 OU and wanted to go ahead and take a pair home, unfortunately we don't keep such scripts in stock because they're so rare. So I told her we'd have to order them and she said "Why? Is that a bad prescription? Do I have bad eyes?" I mean.. I'm pretty sure she can't see a lick without her glasses, which would tip me off as to how bad my eyes are... That was the worst prescription I've seen. Even worse than my grandma's, whose script was in the high 7's but she got cataract surgery and can see great now!

Lucky for me, I got my dad's eyes, -1.50 and -1.25 🙂
