I'm going to be a P1 this fall.- distance. What can you tell me about the fall and spring semester classes? How 'hard' they are, time commitment per each class studying, what they expect of you outside classes (extra groups, etc), etc.

As well, what students say about how hard the first year versus second versus third are?

THANKS!!

As well, which lender did you decide on for your student loans and why? I'm in the process of narrowing them down right now, and I'm still not sure!!!

Hi Drug Doc,

I am here at Creighton as we speak. The distance-based P2's have just completed their summer requirements.

The first year is doable but it will be a lot of work. The courses are more fast-paced so it is important to try and keep up. That can be hard to do when you have seven classes which most of us had last fall (unless you have placed out of courses). I would say that for the fall, biochemistry was my most challenging class and for the spring, physiology and pathology kept me quite busy and stressed out. The good thing is that I have found my professors to be very supportive and genuinely concerned about their students doing well in the program.

I think that it is important to figure out early what classes you feel are going to give you the most trouble and try to put a little more time and emphasis on those. Everyone is different! Also take advantage of the professor's office hours (many have set aside time for "virtual" office hours with their distance students).

We do have group projects, etc. but I didn't have any issues because most of our professors allowed us to pick our own groups so I made sure that I picked people that I knew I could work with. As a distance student I would STRONGLY suggest that you identify early, people in the program who are "like minded" and stick close to them. I have a couple of classmates that I communicate with regularly (sometimes daily) and they help make sure that I stay on top of my work and I do the same for them. Our distance class is pretty cool and for the most part, people try to support each other and help each other get through. It is not nearly as competitive of an environment than I thought it would be but again we are distance students so that probably makes a big difference.

To answer your question about the hardest year, it seems like the concensus is that the P2 year is the hardest. That is when you get into more of the core pharmacy courses such as medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics.

Good Luck!

I was looking for a thread with this information, and thankfully I found it. I was also curious as how your tests are structured in the distance program. I assume that you have the get a proctor set up. How frequently did you have tests? How were they designed? Multiple choice? Short answer? Fill in blank? Hard copy or computer based?

I have several other questions as I am applying for the distance program for next fall but don't know if this is the proper place to discuss.

Thanks for any advice or comments!!!

You do have to set up times to get your exams proctored, but the school helps find you a proctor. Distance and campus exams are the same. Format depends on the professor. I have had m/c, t/f, essay, fill in the blank, labeling diagrams, etc... Most tests are on the computer, however calculations was all hard copy and in all classes even though they are on the computer all scrap paper you write on is given to the proctor and they mail it back to the school. I just finished my first year as a distance student, 2nd year coming up and we've heard it's the hardest! Good luck🙂

Thanks for the good info RxMom. I'm taking online courses now and all of my tests are computerized. I really like it that I get my score right away and don't have to wait! I'm happy to know that the exams are the same that the campus students take. This is all important to me when I take distance classes.

So, which classes did you find were your most difficult in your P1 year? Do you have the time and ability to work? How many hours per week would you think is sufficient?

And, good luck as a P2!! Looking at the curriculum it does look very difficult, but still doable (or at least that is what I tell myself!!). :luck:

I am a campus student (incoming P2) and I thought I would chime in.

IMHO the first year was pretty easy. There were a few exams that were tricky but overall the courses are not difficult, they are mostly review (esp calculations). First semester Biochemistry gave people some problems and second semester people had difficulties with pathology, neither course is unreasonable you just have to study smart.
