Hey all,

I know that they like asking current event med stuff on the test. I saw it pop up deep inside one of the other threads, but how about a fresh one for reference.

I'll start:

Radiation poisoning. Tx with KI to compete with radioactive I in the thyroid.

NBME 7 spoiler. Highlight to read:

An Iraqi veteran returned from duty with a cutaneous lesion. Biopsy showed intracellular organisms. Cutaneous leishmaniasis, which I don't believe is in First Aid anywhere.

A similar question to this was on my real exam

This is called the Wolff Chaikoff effect, where large doses of exogenous iodide actually inhibit thyroid function. The effect lasts for about 10 days.

This line is from Goljan HY notes...

"Pruritic skin lesion in Gulf War veteran: cutaneous leishmaniasis due to bite of sandfiy"
