A friend of mine interviewed for med schools and said that he had to keep up with the current events for the purpose of the interview. Do dental schools care how informed and opinionated we are? would they actually ask about current events during the interview?

Well it depends on what type of current events,
I mean, you have to know that Paris just got out of jail

the girl has so many cars. I wish her parents could buy me a house in San Diego and pay for my tuition.

Do you think they are stupid enough to do that...? probably.

I would imagine you should know imortant news, stuff that is frequently talked about. I guess it's fair game to ask about what's happening in the world.

according to the posters on SDN,

AZ is the only school that will grill you "jeopardy style" on current events. Stated examples include, how many poeple have died to date in iraq? Who is the secretary of state? etc. Name five countries that border Iraq?

It is even the reason that they have asked to have the feedback section removed from the interviews portion of SDN.

That is about all I could gather from running a simple search.

It all depends on what kind of questions your interviewer feels like asking you on the day of your interview. They could ask you anything, ive had interviews that ranged from laid back simple converstations to intense questions about my grades and undergrad.

I do know of and have heard of interviewers asking predents about current events with regards to dentistry, medicine, health care issues and major world events.

Your best bet is to do some research on the school and keep up with any major topics or current events occuring in dentistry, medicine, or health care.

Also check the interview feedback questions to see which kinds of questions predents are being asked.
