I work in a consulting/accounting firm and hate my job, I can't wait to start medical school and begin my medical career. I have biology degree but do accounting instead.... Anybody else stuck in a boring non-medical related job.

Just thought to start a poll

I have a degree in psychology.
I work in IT.

I hate my job. A lot. I can't wait to start medical school.

Dude you didn't wait till I made my poll, LOL

I have two jobs. One of which is at a hospital, with huge amounts of patient contact. The other is at a gym, where I am a personal trainer. My degree is in kinesiology.

I work in a research lab and can not wait to quit and do something else. I'm so excited! :zip:

my degree is in Political Science, right now I am a lowly post bacc student but before I decided I wanted to do the whole Doctor thing I was a political consultant......

👍 Same for me! I can't wait to run my last western/ELISA and feed/split cells for the last time! My last day is June 25th!

LauraDO: when do you get your scores back? Like the 27th or something, right?

It was suppose to be the 26th and now they are projecting 27th.......who knows, rotten people, playing with my mind!

Hopefully March will be a good month for me

I work in a compounding pharmaceutical laboratory. I have a biology degree, so it is sort of related. I really enjoy my job, but I would much rather be a doctor.

I'm a ski instructor in Montana, it's going to be a bit of a transition to move to Southern California and start studying again in August!

Notice how he didnt mention hating his job.

Definitely jealous.... must have been rough. 😉 The wife and I have our yearly ski trip up to North Carolina, going to be going out west once we can afford it, mostly dependent on me finishing med school though!

Anyway, I did audio/video and home theater programming (general "smart home" stuff) right before starting. For the most part it was fun and got to play with cool toys. Was a small company so was very laid back. Don't think I'll miss crawling around attics in the middle of summer in Florida!

My "job" right now is being a stay-at-home mom. Although you could consider it medically related depending on if anyone is sick I didn't vote in the poll, especially because I don't actually get paid. 😀

I am substitute teaching this year at an elementary school and I am thankful everyday I did not go into education!

I've applied for more than 40 positions (at least 10-15 of which have been medically related), and I was just hired to work as a cashier in a market, but it's a union job and my parents don't really want me joining a union. Thoughts?

Why would your parents #1 care where you work and #2 not want you to have a unionized position? Just curious. 😕

I work at one of the UC's in CA and I'm unionized. Thus far, it's been a good thing, as we have gotten merit increases every 6 months and have really good health benefits and retirement packages. All this doesn’t really matter to me so much, but it does to the people who will be working there till they retire. It all depends on what type of job it is, though. You'll only have the job for a couple of months, right? You won’t really work there long enough to experience the benefits of being unionized. I'd say go for it . . . money is money. 🙂

What is your parents problem with unions? I have always had a high opinion of unions bc they at least attempt to make sure the man doesn't screw them over every chance they get.

Well, I think that 50 years ago they were relevant, but now all I have to do is think about the airline industry and their unions and I get angry (I used to work at United, and had to negotiate on the flight attendant contracts regularly, they were ridiculous! Not to mention that we got stuck in LA for the first two days of our honeymoon due to a ramp workers dispute over contracts.) I just don't see why certain careers need unions, while others do not. Should doctors form a union?

Also, I worked as a grocery cashier when I was in high school and was forced to join the union there. The only thing that I ever got out of it was a pin (which we were also forced to wear). I never even got a copy of the union contract, or newsletters or anything, just a deduction from my paycheck.

Wel I dont know the specifics but I have heard somewhere that doctors are not allowed to unionize or something like that. I wish I could know more. Maybe if they were allowed to unionize, we wouldn't have this BS going on with the insurance companies.

How much did the union deduct from your paycheck? Just curious. Oh yeah, I hope your interview goes well. Good luck! 😀

Sounds like some people worked for Kroger. Ouch. I worked for Winn-Dixie, footloose and fancy-free. We threw cans through the stockroom's walls when we got angry, had motorized wheelchair races when we were bored and generally avoided work that wasn't there. We were deliquents. It was the best high school job I had.

As for my job now, I work in a clinical laboratory that focuses on rare metabolic diseases. I spend half my time developing assays to test for enzymatic deficiencies in neurotransmitter metabolism and the other half sequencing the genes for those tested enzymes. I love my job, but I just can't imagine doing it for the rest of my life.

Also, heya everybody, I'm sure I'll see quite a bit more of y'all in the coming months as I gear up for my applications which will likely be DO-heavy. I'm really digging the enthusiasm and all-around positive attitude everyone on the DO forum seems to have.

My union deducts $45 a month from my paycheck! 🙄

Wow, that's a lot. Does it seem to work out with the benefits? Like I have to pay a ridiculous amount for health insurance. (BCBS for $180/months for me and my kids) Do they get you good deals or anything?

Yeah, it's a lot, but for me it's been worth it. I pay $35 a month for health insurance (Health Net) and that includes dental and vision. I could have chosen Kaiser for $15 a month, but I'm not a fan of Kaiser. 👎

It's a really great place to work long term. There are all kinds of contacts with the union and permanent employees . . . it's pretty much impossible to get fired after you become a permanent employee. You're also guaranteed a raise at least once a year (although they do have caps on how much you can make for all the positions).

I am the head Lacrosse Coach at a college in the NorthEast...I do not hate my job....in fact I have recently been thinking about deferring a year😱

I used to work for the state of Missouri in their health lab, testing babies all babies born in Missouri for rare metabolic diseases. It could have been interesting, except computers did all of the work, so I only worked for about 2 hours of the day - during an 8 hours shift. It was the most boring thing in the world playing computer games and reading books for 6 hours a day. We couldn't play on the internet. 👎

Right now I'm in a job that has nothing to do with medicine. I'm at a part-time job at a company that prints magazines, working a couple of 12 hour shifts a week. Finding work in my area isn't an easy thing to do so I guess it's a good thing I have something.

I can't wait to be done with it though. I'm hoping when it gets warmer I can find a job that'll get me outdoors for a couple of months. And then it's off to school!

I build artificial limbs and make custom scoliosis braces. I also make those cute helmets for bumpy baby heads. I also take trauma call on the weekend for anyone breaking their back, leg, neck. I fit HALO if you know what that is. Looking at the posts, we are such a diverse lot!

I don't know, but everyone I've talked to here (parents, brothers, family friends) have said not to join a union under any circumstances. They said that it's throwing away my money since I'll only be there a few months and won't receive any benefit from paying union fees. I don't know. I was just curious about other people's opinions on it though, so thanks.

I see what you mean and that's what I was getting at in my post (the fact that you would only be working there for a couple of months). I guess it depends on how much the fees are . . . do you know how much they are? That might help you make your decision. Good Luck :luck:

I'm an EMT working for an ambulance service and also substitute teaching, (also thankful I did not go into education!!!) :zip:

I am a Patient Care Tech on the Immuno-compromised unit at the Peds Hospital near my house, and I love it. Peds oncology can be sad, but at the same time it's very rewarding.

Lets see, what have I done/do?

I'm still employed at a ski resort as a rental technician.
I'm a paintball referee.
I've sold hardware/flooring/patio furniture at a store back home.
I've also done telephone interviewing.

Probably the most random assortment of jobs that aren't medically related or related amongst each other.

Oh, I see. Are you going to be getting benefits that make up for the loss in pay, like health insurance or higher pay that they have negotiated for in the first place? Just curious.

By the way, are you going to be going to NOVA? I think at the KCUMB interview you really seemed to like it there. Florida weather would be great right now. 😀

Full time RN Case Manager at a hospital...My last day is 8/1 but I will stay per diem. I review every patient that comes into the hospital for status and also do the DC planning...deal with insurance companies 🙁. Can't wait to start school!!!😍

Really? What kind of testing? I'm guessing it was some sort of automated GC/LC?

We're very low throughput (referring physicians talk to us after the already know something's wrong, just not what), so I stay busy, which really is a blessing.

I work for a human resource consulting firm in sales, absolutely nothing medical about it. Do you think this could hurt my chances of acceptance during an interview? 😕

No.

No, no benefits whatsoever.

Yeah, I'm planning to go to Nova. I enjoyed KCUMB, but I was waitlisted there. Overall Nova has been the school I liked the most, so I think this is a good fit for me. Are you planning to go to KCUMB?

I know what you mean about the Florida weather. My aunt and uncle just got back from a vacation at Disney World, and I am so jealous I couldn't go with them.

As of now, I will be going to KCUMB. Well I wish you all the best at NOVA. I say do whatever you feel with regard to the job thing. It's only for a few months. The union dues do theoretically go to a good cause even if you don't benefit from them. IDK. 😉

I have a degree in Neuroscience.

I'm a bartender and substitute teacher in high school.

Is it August yet?

I graduated in december with a degree in Exercise Science with a bio minor. I couldn't find anything medically related and last Monday I got a job working construction. I enjoy it and it will definitely help to motivate me to get started in August. Also, I can't wait until I learn OMM and someone can practice on me. Construction is alright, but it's hard on a back.😀

I own my own cafe/gelateria in Chicago. I designed it myself the way it looks, put a lot of work into it. Who would have though a degree in biology, with minors in chemistry and bioethics would get me here. lol.

Wow, that place looks awesome. Congrats on doing your own thing.

I tested CAH and CF, but all I did was punch the blood spots and put them in their respective spots on the trays and loaded them into the machine and told the computer it was ready to go. I don't know what type of program it was, and I can't remember the name of the machine. They nicknamed it King Henry, so that is what we always referred to it as.
