Hi there,

First off, let me state that this is not a trolling thread, I'm genuinely curious in the issue and figured some people on here know way more about medical issues than I do. That being said, what are some medical issues in the US right now? I realize paperwork is pain in the arse, but what other sorts of problems am I not aware of?

Thanks!

Malpractice, Zika, ACA Economics (including issues that arise on those that reject the Medicaid expansion), Preventative Care Investments, Amount of $$ funneled into geriatric care and nursing home-like facilities (e.g., extension of life v. quality of life), automation (including Watson & future AIs) of physician/healthcare jobs, medical school tuition costs, residency slots v. demand for greater physicians

Keep em coming, SDN

Agree with the above. Also:

I just did a Google news search on "health care". You should try it.
Some of the issues that came up:
Language and cultural barriers
prescription drug prices (Epi Pen has been in the news lately)
abortion access and trans health care
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump agree that health care is too expensive but disagree on how to fix it
need to make healthcare integrated and affordable (integrated means coordinated among providers and sites -not racial integration)

I also know that
Insurance premiums are rising but insurers are still losing money and leaving some markets
Younger people are not signing up for health insurance which is putting the ACA in a death spiral. Younger/healthier people who would pay to cover the costs of the older/sicker people are not signing up and the cost of providing care is not matched by insurance premiums.
Recent study shows that emergency department utilization has been rising with ACA

Precision medicine

Add in:
Direct marketing to consumers by Big Pharma
Maldistribution of clinicians in the US
Cost of medical school tuition driving people away from Primary Care and into specialties
Medical student debt
Effects of anti-vax fanatics
growth of "superbugs"
Ethics of non-essential for survival transplants (uterus, face, hands)
HMO economic concerns interfering in medical decision making

Subscribing to thread. All great issues worthy of being well versed on.

Patient safety
Evidence Based Medicine
Overutilization of Care
Reimbursement
ACO
Transparency
Transition from hospital to outpatient care
Cost of Care
Theranos?

Topics that would be awesome
AI and interpretation of tests
Biomonitoring devices

The list goes on an on.

Haha vape naysh was a classic. I still enjoy his stuff, but I'd like to see a return to sketch. The video reactions are funny but unoriginal.

I'll add one to the mix: the complexities of billing and insurance, especially Medicare. Patients often do not understand how insurance works and what will be included as preventative or not. Example: pt goes to doc wanting contraception. Pt has weight gain and irregular cycles and doc wants to check it out before giving birth control, so orders some lab tests while at the preventative contraception visit. Pt has to wait for labs to come back and then go see Dr again to review labs and get rx. In this particular example, only one part of the initial visit and the actual contraception were covered. Bill was well over $1500 and pt was shocked and unable to pay. They just went in for an annual wellness visit and contraception and followed what the Dr told them to do.

Insurance screws people over on a daily basis

Insurance is a necessary evil born out of the effect of big pharma and medical devices companies that spend millions lobbying the FDA and setting stupidly high medication and tech prices. Without [the good aspects of] insurance, people wouldn't be able to afford many crucial medications.
