Current transitional year intern- doing an ortho research year after, then applying ortho? Realistic?

Hi. Current TY intern here. Solid scores during med school (Step1/2 24x/24x). Entered a transitional year kind of late thinking it would help give me another year to decide what I really want to do. Basically, wondering if it would be possible to finish my TY, enter a research year in ortho, then apply for ortho 2021. Would I be screened out pretty quickly as a grad? Any insight appreciated. Thanks!

There's a resident in a NY hospital that did this exact same thing and successfully matched. Did research at HSS applied and did not match. Did a TY year at a place associated with the same hospital system and matched into ortho the next cycle.
