Deadlines for deposits are due soon, and I would really appreciate some insight from others on which school might be the best choice.

CUSOM
  • Pro
-Brand new school with amazing facilities
-SIM labs are incredible
-Great board scores
-Attached to a University
  • Con
-New school
-Heard some questionable things about the rotation sites
-Relatively rural

VCOM-CC
  • Pro
-Beautiful campus with great facilities
-Closer to Family
-More established reputation
-Have friends that are current students
-Mandatory research opportunities
  • Con
-Had some issues with the board scores when I finally found them
-Have some concerns about the curriculum
-Mandatory research opportunities

Overall I loved both of the schools and would be happy to end up at either school. Not really concerned about the mandatory attendance, and in regard to the board scores I know that it is up to the individual to do well on them. However I am concerned with how the school goes about preparing the student, and want to know that they are setting their students up for success if they want it bad enough.

The students and faculty at VCOM-CC were great and I genuinely enjoyed talking to them. The faculty at CUSOM was equally impressive and were wonderful, however I did not get much of an opportunity to interact with the students and when I did something felt "off" about them. Overall great experience at both schools.

As of now I am leaning towards VCOM, but would appreciate any advice or thoughts on the matter.

Thanks

I feel like I could have written this post myself, as I'm also torn between these two schools. Campbell's facilities and technology (like HoloLens, for example) were pretty dazzling, but I wonder how often those elements are utilized in the curriculum. The faculty seemed very sincere when speaking on their commitment to students' success, and, as you mentioned, I like that it is affiliated with an established university that has a track record of success in other programs. Location isn't great, but at least Raleigh is ~45min away. Overall, I feel that CUSOM has the potential to be a top-notch program before too long.

With that being said, however, certain aspects of VCOM-CC are more appealing to me. In addition to VCOM having been around for a longer period of time, I like its location much better. My best friend lives there, and Spartanburg has much more to do than Buies Creek/Lillington (not to mention its proximity to Greenville, which is awesome). I realize that we won't have tons of free time during school, but I'd like to have a good selection of food/drinks/activities reasonably close by when we do. From what I've seen, research opportunities may be better at VCOM due to their work with other local colleges and the Gibbs Cancer Center.

Really, I'd like to know how to assess each school's clinical sites for quality. Students from both schools have told me they love their rotations, but I don't know how best to judge which ones will be better for learning and career preparation. I'd love it if someone more informed commented on this post and shared some insight on which program may be better all-around.
