Hi All!

I just received my first interview invite of the cycle and I now have a big decision to make. Do I cut my flow or do I let it grow? It has been over a year since I cut my hair (I'm a male) and it is quite flowy. I can wear it in a headband, ponytail, etc. When I wear it back, though, I do not believe that it looks bad. What do people think admissions/interviewers will think of the long hair?

I originally planned on growing it out for locks of love, and I still would like to do this if possible. Do any of you think that this is something I can talk about in an interview, or does my hair need to go?

Any opinions are welcome!!

Do you really want to show off your hair to a bunch of old bald adcoms?

There is no real issue here. I would just cut it to be safe, donate that hair, interview, grow back out, then donate more. It would equal out in the end.

My hair isn't long enough to donate yet. They require at least 10 inches of hair. I started with a shaved head so I have a ways to go.

Medicine is still a fairly traditional field so short hair is the norm. I mean, if the long hair is part of you, you can keep it but know that you're bound to get judged and possibly make a less favorable impression on the adcom.

Also, on a side note. I would recommend donating to some place besides Locks of Love. Heard they're pretty shady with what they do with their hair donations.

OK now I see, sorry about that. In that case, I would find a good short hairstyle that can kind of hide enough excess hair to were you still look "professional", but will not be starting from scratch post interviews.

Good luck by the way.

In the exact same boat as you (my hair is literally the same length as that picture). I'm keeping it for sure - no way I'm cutting it now.. Much to my father's despise.

I'm a guy who likes my hair long. One thing I know from looking back on pictures from my college days is that ponytail length is too long. You don't need to lose all of it, but get a stylish medium-length cut for the interview (and later for your rotations), but feel free to wear it as long as you like once you're in your own practice. Especially if you're in psych. 😉

Seriously, though, they're right. Medical schools are still pretty old school. Don't be telling your grandkids in fifty years that you could have been a doctor, but they wouldn't let you in because you didn't want to get a haircut.

That actually looks good on you. I wish I had hair like that... I say keep it. I actually just met a med student last weekend who had hair almost identical.
