Just wondering if I should include any clinical/volunteer activities from undergrad on my CV for my ophtho application. Is it a bad idea to have more than a one page CV? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think the CAS for ophthalmology residency limits the amount of space you can utilize for such activities. Start with your more current activites and if there's space, fill it. Re: # of pages for CVs: some well published faculty have CVs that number in the 30-40 page range.

I understand that faculty CV's may be that long, but what about student CV's to send in with the CAS application. Should I include undergraduate experiences in this CV then?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I didn't think that we actually submitted a CV to CAS. In fact, the CAS manual specifically says that they will NOT distribute a CV for you.

So what's the dilly here? Do we actually have to include a CV with the CAS packet??

Thanks,

Andrew

I don't think you're allowed to send out a CV, but there is a section with questions that sound like CV-type stuff. I have a similar question about the application.

Do you include undergraduate honors/awards?

When they say past employment do you include undergrad work-study?

What are public service activities? Are these the medical school clubs and activities?

Trying to get this out next week 😱

Either way will do.

Disadvantage of a long CV is that it may contain fluff. If not, keep it long.

Please read the instructions for submitting the CAS. You can NOT include a CV. Honors/Awards, etc go directly onto the application itself. If things have not changed, the CAS is an adobe file that you can type right into. Specific programs (like UC Irvine) required a CV in addition to the CAS, but the CV should not replace the CAS itself. Hope this clears up some confusion.

How do we find out the "additional" materials (like CV for UC Irvine) needed for each program? Should we email each program we apply and ask directly? Or will they contact the applicant once they know you've applied to their program and tell you the extra stuff they need? Thanks!

I would look at the list of programs that SFmatch provides. I believe that last year UC Urvine listed the fact that they required a CV (to be mailed directly to UC Irvine) under the "special instructions" section. When in doubt, call the program. No one will fault you for being thorough as long as you are not obnoxious or demanding when you call. Sometimes it's easier to drop an e-mail.
