Recently my old manager at CVS asked me if I could work for them this summer, but the thing is he wants me to work the night shift. 3 days a week, 10:30pm - 7am. I was wondering if anybody has experience working these late shifts.

I worked the graveyard shift for two years in a production plant while I was doing my pre-reqs and I loved it. It is a little intimidating at first, but I found that I slept less, and I really enjoyed having my evenings off. I am a night owl though, something you should consider. Everybody is different. I would go for it.

I would never work the graveyard shift again. I tried it twice and my body didn't respond well to this. Also people who work during these shifts tend to develop hypertension and are more prone to CVD later in life. I would not do it!

I worked 3rd shift for 9 months for a qc lab. It has its pros/cons.

pros (a lot less work, nobody is behind your back, can sleep a couple hours and get paid 😀 )

cons (your life is totally miserable in the summer time. For me it was really hard to sleep in summer days, and I felt tired most of the time)

If you really have to do it and have no choice, then go ahead and do it. If not, don't do it.

Thanks for the replys everyone. In the end I decided that I valued my sleep and the healthy functioning of my body over $6 hr. So it's now mid June & I'm restarting the job hunt. Maybe I'll apply at that McDonalds across the street 😀

$6/hr? Holy crap, you'd be a fool had you taken it, that's peanuts.

I did night shift for five years. It is hard on your body but it can be done. It takes six months just to get used to it. Anything that messes with the routine - like a vacation - is hell. That first week back is physically painfull, almost to the point of being worth not taking the vacation if you catch my drift.

Keeping hydrated is very important. You may be tired, you may be hungry, but you may not be hungry and tired. That is how disasters happen.

Master the art of the power nap. Eat on the run and at lunch time SLEEP, sort of. The power nap is a refreshing light sleep where any sound, like a customer tapping, wakes you up. It can be done. Quiet at home is essential. Blackout curtains in the bedroom. You get the idea. The neighbor's chainsaw doesn't help.

Three days on four days off sucks. It took me three days to recover. Six and eight or 7 and 7 work better. That leaves you three days to zone and four days to play.

I would do it again.

One last tip. Driving home is the most dangerous time. If you start nodding, pull off and nap right there. Trust me, it works.

Good luck to you !
