Cvs two step verification process

Trying to copy Walmart's 4 point check and visual verify.
 
I used to work for CVS and now I work at a two-step setup place. Trust me, the two-step is SO much better. You will love it. No more things going to Out of Stock when it is typed wrong, no more filling something that was typed wrong, etc etc.

Wait CVS fills things that are entered wrong but you don't check until after? Seems backwards if true.

Both data review and product review are done after the script is typed and filled.

The nice part about that set up is that when everything is typed correctly it’s very efficient. The production tech doesn’t have to wait for the pharmacist to review before filling prescriptions.

In the long run I think it’s much less efficient due to all of the errors that are caught only after the prescription has been filled. I’m sure that’s why Cvs is changing their set up.

And why say “if true”? You don’t trust me? 😛
 
Most chain pharmacies use this system now, it's the gateway to shared data entry/shared data review/QA and the loss of more of your tech hours/pharmacist overlap. The only shocking thing to me is CVS took so long to get on board with it as they've historically carried the worst staffing allotments and this opens up further hour cutting.

The if true part was if my understanding was true
 
Its frustrating though because if it is a slow rph working then nothing gets done. The rph doesnt check so nothing can be counted by techs. At least with cvs if you have slow rph working the techs can do all the work and leave a mountain of baskets ready to check the next day.

I also like having the product in front of me when i am checking.
 
At CVS this will be bad. Just to high volume for most RPH. Verify scripts, verify on holds and now verify everything typed in QT. Floaters and slow rph’s will leave everything in QV. Will be a disaster.
 
At other companies, it's not uncommon to verify 40-50 on-hold a day out of 250-300 at a mid-volume store, including those with no known ins (I get like 15-20 pts a weekday with no insurance and cannot reach/left VM). You just have to adapt (or not for slow RPH)
 
As long as you don't have to verify the rx for a second time, what does it matter?
 
I don't know why they didn't do this sooner. I had a rotation at Walgreens many years ago and remember how much better their system was. At CVS you're constantly sending back wrong sigs, wrong qty, even wrong drug. It's such a waste of time to have the tech fix the error and recount and put the mistake back on the shelf or back in robot (more work for RPh).

I also don't understand why drop off and pickup are separate windows. People are constantly sent from pickup to drop off and vice versa. At Walgreens you do both at the register.
 
Nothing new. Walgreens has been doing this for years.

I never got that either. People don’t know which window to go to and they wait in line twice. Plus as understaffed as CVS wants you to be it makes no sense to have so many windows.
 
Yup and another thing Walgreens does better, the consult window is right next to the RPh verification station. They don't have to move to talk to a customer, some even verify simultaneously. At CVS you have to drop everything you're doing, walk over to the consult window, and walk back. Repeat all day with all the first fill consults.

I imagine C2 safes must be further back though...

This & the way many Targets are set up - they actually put a computer stationed right next to a cash register (simple design changes no one ever seems to want to implement to make the job less stressful). I changed my drive-thru set up one night in this fashion only to find out someone rearranged things back to their unorganized ways requiring one to run around.

The C2 safe was a short walk behind the consult window but it was also at eye level so no bending down to the floor. Yet another better design.
 
So... CVS is currently overwhelmed with less tech hours and they want to add more work without adding more man-power? Yup, sounds about right.

It’s actually less work to catch the error before it gets filled.

Although I certainly agree with the gist of your meaning.

Already doing this BS for the same RX multiple nights in a row from the "efficient" on Hold system when Rx gets scheduled only to come back as refill too soon. CVS IT system will try anything multiple times in an attempt to get a script filled - sadly this works on some tech's who will cash out ANYTHING (needs more idiot proofing).

I would assume this would depend on how prone one is to making errors though. Either way, I'm sure CVS pharmacists aren't too happy about having added tasks lol

How is it added work? You already do data review than product review. Now you will just do data review before it gets filled.

Right, so unless i'm misunderstanding this process... we're talking about instead of pharmacist checking everything all at once, we are now going to check date entry separately from production review, right? so if someone typed something wrong, you don't necessarily have to send the entire rx back to the tech to retype and reprint the label... if i'm understanding this correctly lol
 
I like to look at the product while i am doing data review especially for new drugs so im not a fan of this two step system. Also OTC stuff is easier to check when i have the product in front of me.

It would only make sense to everything except product verification before it is filled. doing it any other way is silly. This allows them to offload this to people at remote locations.

WAG has been doing upfront verification for over a decade. After data review, DUR pops up. If we verify for other stores (not mandated, but district is usually clustered so one could potentially help out a nearby store), we can create a DUR exception and let the local store handle it. I really like this system and is much more efficient
 
My biggest fear is verifying after a careless/incompetent pharmacist did the initial verification. Besides the fact that they tend to be slow, there's always the possibility of them making an error and another pharmacist has to fall with them. Heck, I even asked my DL who will take the fall if an error were to occur. Her answer isn't exactly comforting: "The initial verifying pharmacist would be the person who is liable under CVS policy but I can't speak for entities outside of CVS."

I guess I just don't like the idea that I have to depend on the competency of a potentially hazardous pharmacist (and I have that very pharmacist as my staff). I'll probably end up double checking everything, which just makes it the same as before. However, knowing CVS IT it'll be too broken to make it a smooth check.

I really wish CVS would make pick up and drop off at the same place!!! Too many windows and customers just pick one. They will go to consultation EVERY. TIME. they have a coupon instead of drop off. They go to consultation to just refill something too. Since my store usually doesn’t have a person “sitting” at drop off at all times, they will always walk right past drop off. CVS needs to change this as well - where’s their comment box?!
 
When rite aid came out with two step check they made it very difficult for product review rph to go back and check data review. Now it is easier you can hit alt + f8 to pull up hard copy.
and yes lots of sloppy mistakes i have had to go back and fix at product review.

Also state board in certain states wanted rph to sign and fax in daily log to every store they helped with remote checking. Thankfully this is no longer required.
 
the non-two-step verification process is why i never wanted to leave w/algreenz. ugh. it's sooooooo smooth at wagz and sooooo easy if you wanna check the original rx. i did a rotation at c v esss and ugh...made me appreciate what i had at the greenz. not to say i don't have gripes with some of the technology now, mostly it's just super clunky and not as fast as it used to be b/c they've tried to integrate too many things i suppose. really curious to see what a complete overhaul of the technology at walgreeenz will look like.
 
Some of these f*ckers leave pages and pages of on holds. No way they’re verifying data entry lol and on top of that you have in store counsles that pop up at the top of QV that are pcq points that most don’t do. This is awful.
 
No matter what CVS does, it will remain a particularly hostile place to work at due to their upper management that does not care about the staff nor the patients but only about the numbers!!!
Most of CVS pharmacists who I know are miserable and wish to leave. Unfortunately, CVS (also WAGs) understand that these pharmacists have loans and bills to pay and they take advantage of that.
Too sad a noble profession like pharmacy is operating in such horrible conditions.

CVS has tried that at a "store of the future" in my area, where they try out new things, and apparently it didn't work out. I think the main problem is pick up getting backed up due to the time it takes to fix the problem. Now that CVS has added RX pickup experience to the scorecard for MCE, anything that takes slightly longer than usual will just backfire on the store and the store will end up with 1's on the stupid surveys.
 
I know this has already taken effect in some districts. Anyone had a chance to work with it yet?
 
Wal mart has a good system with 4-point and visual verify. But the connexus system over all is a beast and labor intesive. 250 at my store feels like 400 ya know? I used to fill 150-200 with a grocery chain in Florida by myself and 1 tech....it was hard , but i got it done. I could NEVER do that at wal mart,.
 
They started to build new kind of stores with pharmacy, minute clinic, dental clinic (kind of all in one spot)

If you are caught up you will start to verify scripts for nearby stores that are behind... probably QT also
 
Some prescriber's offices are so terrible that remote verification for your store would be a PITA if you have a remote pharmacist flagging everything for "clarification."
 
I personally always thought it was a bit nuts to dispense before you check it. If its wrong it has to go all the way back to the beginning. I always worked places with 2 step verification. Yeah you will have some people that suck at getting two things done but dont they suck at getting verification done anyway. So does it really make a difference? As for those concerned about something being upfront verified wrong unless they drastically change what your product review screen looks like you can still double check it in the last stage. I always do that take a fraction of a second longer. As a new grad anything that was new i checked one more time at final verification and i was considered one of the fastest floats in my district. Long run i think you will all wonder how you did anything before 2 step verification.

This is just to add to what owlegrad said. If I remember correctly, the CVS system requires the pharmacist to enter C-IIs.I actually liked that.
Since there is rarely any overlap at CVS, the two step verification system is in theory a good thing.

I miss the good old days of Connexus. It was a great, easy system back in 2008-2009. I last used it a few years ago and the new practices made it overall just less fun to work there.

I love the idea of 4 Point or Data Verification (whichever your system calls it), but the PDX-based Enterprise system (EPS, I think?) was awful when I was working alone. Fingerprints here, there, everywhere; everything was urgent, and the pharmacist ended up being the bottleneck for product, etc.

I think it's great with adequate staffing, but I have DV PTSD sometimes.
 
I like the way it is now. Less than 1% of scripts get sent back anyways, its not a huge deal to redo 2 scripts a day
