I have conflicting information between Barron's AP Bio 3rd ed., Cliff AP Bio 3rd ed., and Campbells 7th ed, which only alludes to it in picture. Basically, where does cytokinesis BEGIN. I am not arguing that it obviously happens in telophase, if it happens at all. But where does it begin?

Cliffs = "During TELOPHASE, cytokinesis begins, chromosomes uncoil into chromatin, and the nuclear membrane and nucleolus reappear." pg 84 answer #4 explanation.

Barrons = "Cytokinesis. It begins during mitosis, often during ANAPHASE." pg 146.

Campbells = Cytokinesis is discussed under telophase, however the picture of anaphase shows a cell shape that is altered and looks to be beginning cytokinesis. pg 223

Does anyone have any input? Granted, if this question were to show up on the DAT, I would possibly thrash my computer monitor after the test were over. This is such a ridiculous detail to test over, but I would still like to know.

In a conflict, always go with Campbell's, as the DAT makers don't give a rat's behind about review books.

So here are our facts from Campbells regarding Cytokinesis:

In plant cells, it begins during Telophase.

In Meiosis I it happens simultaneously with Telophase. And in Meiosis II, based on their diagrams, it happens with/after telophase as well.

Your conflict is about Mitosis however, this is the best Campbell does, and I think it's what you should logically think as well, especially considering the way Barron's, et al, also word things, which isn't ever saying it definitely begins during anaphase or telophase: Overlapping with the latter stages of mitosis, cytokinesis completes the mitotic phase

They aren't going to ask on the DAT for you to pick, if they did, you would simply contend the question after the exam, citing Campbell's lack of specificity, and they would be forced to concede; thus they won't ask this question. What they will ask are things with definite answers regarding cytokinesis, like the fact that it directly follows mitosis, is part of the mitotic phase, occurs through such and such mechanism, how it's different in plants, etc.

Anyway, I hope this helps, and I hope you don't stress it anymore.

Cheers

Edit: Just want to add, they could ask the when question, but let me rephrase about the "picking" part, they would have an answer that corresponds to the above "later stages" of mitosis, so you obviously aren't going to say cytokinesis begins before anaphase.

Thanks for the reply. I have for the most part, found Cliffs AP and Barrons AP to compliment each other extremely well. If I find holes in the info, then I turn to Campbells. But your right, I should probably stick with Campbells on conflicting information. Thanks again.
