I understand how to recognize D and L isomers in hawthorn diagrams, but how are they recognized in the ring structures?

Right Down and Dirty
Right = D
In cyclic form Right = Down

Anamoric carbon in a cyclic form it bounds to two Oxygenes
In Fischer projection of glucose it is carbon number 5 that determines D it OH to the right and L if OH to the left.
