so i did a DITY move for my first PCS. was amazingly easy and straightforward, and i submitted all my stuff on Aug 6, with a 4-6 week time from for getting paid. cool, or so i thought.

well, now i'm almost 12 weeks out and no one has any idea when or if i'll get paid. reportedly people who submitted in september have been paid, but mine is "with 3 or 4 others" that they're waiting on. the kicker is there is absolutely nothing i can do about it. pretty frustrating. supposedly the whole thing is due to "DFAS being half manned" or some BS

no more DITY moves for me. i didn't even load any sandbags or anything into my truck, but in hindsight maybe anothe few hundred pounds would reimburse me for the interest free loan i'm giving the govt.

If you think that's bad wait until you try to get reimbursed for the stuff the government breaks while moving your stuff. I'm 16 months on station and still unable to get my reimbursement. It took them 3 days after delivering the rest of my stuff to find my piano. How do you lose a piano? I actually vowed just the opposite, all my moves will be DITY moves if I can help it.

I will never DITY again...it probably cost me more than they paid me (95%...yeah right).

The way to go is the Partial DITY.

As far as the contracted movers goes...that is hit or miss, mostly miss. But at least you don't have to drive the truck across the country. And I really don't have that much nice stuff.

I did a DITY (second PCS, first time they moved) and liked it. Got an advance before I did anything, used it to hire a truck (one of those pods where they drop it off and you load it yourself), hired some guys to load/unload, and I was done. Cost of gas included in pod rental.

Sort of like a partial dity but I got the money and subcontracted everything out. I drew up the terms of insuring, etc. Hired the guys I wanted. Made about $5000. (It was easier than the first PCS, where I didn't have any control.)
