So I just transferred from a CC to a UC.

I took 12 units for my first quarter. My midterms are 40% of my grade, and finals are 60%.

For two of my science classes, I got about B+'s on my midterms, but for the third, genetics, I got a D 🙁

From comparing with other students, I studied a lot for it. After evaluating myself, I'm changing my studying habits to actually understand the concepts rather than focus on simply sitting down and reading and doing problems.

My roommate feels that I should drop the class, but then I'd only have 8 units. I hear that most students in the class are usually able to turn around towards the end to end up with a C/B.

Should I drop? I really don't want to give up this class, but I may have to go against my better judgement.... Which is why I'm asking you guys. I really hope dentistry is still in my grasp. I transferred from CC with 3.67

Thanks

Final being 60%,

There is a lot of room for you to improve.

is it one midterm 40% and 60% a final that contributes to the grade? or is it a few midterms?

either way, I think you can still do better than B/B+

Is your class curved?

I got a 50% on one genetics midterm once and then pulled myself up to a B+. So it is doable.

Would dropping it now get you a W?

I have a little over a week to decide to drop it.

And yes, one midterm is 40% of the grade...

If you think you'll get a D in a course. Drop it.

I think we had a poll here a while ago, and the majority would drop the course rather than getting a C. You can explain your W, saying that you just transferred to a new environment, and had trouble adjusting. Your D would be on your transcript permanently, and would be detrimental to your chances of admittance into dental school.

Let's do some rough calculations.
1 D, 5 As.
That's a 3.50 GPA.

That's right. With a D, you have to get 5 A's to get your GPA in line with the average accepted GPA of a dental school matriculant. And we all know how hard it is to get an A in any class.

If it's your first W, then you can explain it easier than having multiple W's on your transcript.

drop it like its hot.
take the W and move on

damn only two exams?

I did drop a class that I was getting a D+ and got a W.

But are you 100% positive you are getting a D?

Drop it.

On a transcript...

D = Dumb ass
W = Wuss

I would rather be a wuss, who can get the benefit of doubt from a dschool, than a dumb ass which can lead to nothing but a rejection.

Wow. Thanks guys 🙂

I just thought it might be possible to get a B.... but it would be weird to have 8 units only.

Thanks again

First off... no dental school will reject an applicant because they have one D (genetics isn't even all that important for dental school ~ if it was med school, it would be a different story).

Second off all, relax, stay with the class, it seems like an "eye-opener" type, meaning its a hard class that will teach you how to study for other challenging courses. So stay with it and try your best. If you still end up with a D to C- at the end, its okay, it seems to me your overall GPA (and perhaps sGPA) are still good.

By the way, I HATED genetics too.... t.

I received a D in the lecture portion of my Genetics course in undergrad and it totally screwed up my GPA. If I could go back, I would have dropped the course and re-took it at a later time. There was also a big language barrier with my instructor which made things more difficult. If the worst happens, you will have to work that much harder to keep your GPA up. Good luck to you!

Im on the same boat as you mitrieD. I have a 68% in my ecology class that I am taking which is like 2 points from a C but for me the drop deadline has already passed =[ I have a final in this class coming up soon and I pretty much need like am 85% or higher to pass with a 70. My problem is that I always second guess myself on exams and always change right answers to wrong ones =[

I remember getting a 52% on my midterm, and wound up with a B for the course. Go to the professor, talk with them and see what you need to do to improve your grade as far as study habits go. That's what I did when I received that 52%, she told me how she would study, so I did, and pulled out with a B. YOU CAN DO IT! It depends if you WANT to do it, putting in the work that is. I know what I would do, ace the final so I can be guilt free and go out after finals. And get into dental school of course! Best of luck!

Thanks MuckieMan23... I'll look into talking to my professor. I'm just not the type of person to give up. But if I have to, I have to.

I had the same experience with genetics. Its a cool course, but damn it can screw you.

Other classes I would avoid:
vertebrate histology
parasitology
ecology

These will challenge you to the level of ochem (especially vert histo). micro-anatomical nomenclature and physiology is just crazy wordy!

multi-cellular extraepithelial extrinsic exocrine secretory epithelium... for example.

worst choice I ever made! 🙂

Is D like a 2.0?

well in that case I would say if you think you can still get a 3.0 or better keep the class. If not it may be a smart move to drop.
