So I'm taking classes at my local cc. I think I'll be getting a D in pre-calculus. I can kick myself for slacking off, but I'm sure I'll get an A when I re-take the class.
Anyone make a D in pre-calculus or any other significant course but was still favorably received by adcoms? I have 6 years before I apply to med school.

Thanks

If you get more D's, yeah then you are screwed. Your chances are impossible to tell at this point.

I believe that's why we have a gpa for undergrad. I don't think they will look at every course grade.

Pre-cal isn't a significant course. It does hurt your BCPM, it did mines a little (2 years ago), but you can still bounce back. NO MORE D's! OR C's.

Thanks, everyone. I have never gone into a testing situation and bomb so completely, as I did yesterday, so I'm catastrophizing a bit. And I'm still feeling like a deer caught with her pants down. :laugh:

Love mixing the metaphors.

if you want, you can retake the D ----improves gpa, and is considered grade replacement for D.O.--- something to consider

The grade replacement policy for D.O. admissions is very helpful for correcting GPA blemishes. It will not, however, substitute for hard work/effort, which you need to start applying to your studies. Hang a pic of House, Patch Adams, or whoever else floats your boat on your wall for motivation. You can do it!

You can recover from the D so early in your career, there are plenty more classes to help you raise the GPA.

With that said, you need to catch up on what's covered in that class. None of the pre-reqs are especially have math classes but Physics and Gen Chem can be a bit of a challange if you are having such serous problems with basic math.

It won't look bad as long as you don't get any more D's, but you NEED to re-take that class just to make sure you have your basics down for physics and chem. If you're struggling a lot, get help!! I needed a tutor to get through calc this past quarter, and embarrassing as it was, it was the best choice I've made thus far.

How is getting a tutor embarassing? Just curious. 🙂

it really shouldn't be...idk i just felt really bad about it, mostly because most of my friends are engineers/math geniuses and i already got a lot of crap for switching out of BME after my first semester

Got my grades today. SO I got a C+ instead of a D. Big whoop - I'll re-take it during the summer. With a little more effort I could have pulled off with a B. :idea:

This is an extremely helpful idea. I'm through kicking myself for slacking off. :luck:

Don't re-take a C+, especially in pre-calc. Review what you need for Chem and Physics, and move on. Not worth retaking the class.
Of course. Move on. I'll try to sneak in a new question without starting a new post. I'm scheduled to take chem 104, a&p II and bio 104 next semester, along with an independent studies class (and a 15 hour a week job). I'm being told that 3 sciences in one semester is not a good idea. Is this a general consensus?

If this next semester will be your first taking multiple physical and biological science classes, you might want to drop one of them and put in some gen-ed requirement instead. (I don't know if chem 104 and bio 104 are the first or second semesters of those classes) If you have a lab with all three, you definitely want to think twice before taking all three at the same time.

If you have previous college-level science classes, with labs, and you have done well, you shouldn't have a problem as long as you can dedicate the needed time to the classes. 3 sciences in one semester is a bad idea if you don't know what you are getting into, but if you have some under your belt already and think you can handle it, go for it, but be prepared to sacrifice commitments outside school if necessary to get the A's. Good luck!

I have to wonder, why will it take 6 years before you apply? I vote for you retaking pre-calc though because, trust me, Calculus I&II is a lot harder than Pre-calc. You'll need a strong foundation in Pre-calc before you can expect to do well in Calc.

I'm glad you insisted on an explanation. Wow, I was really zonked out when I wrote that. My thoughts were, at the time, "2 years at cc + 4 years at the university = 6 years." No - I have 3 years of schooling to complete after this semester.

Don't beat yourself up. I had a C in Calc, ended up with a 3.8 sGPA. Also, I'm not sure if this is true but don't some schools replace the grade if you retake the course? Again, I've heard this somewhere but never actually had any experience with it.

Bio 104 & Chem 104 are the 2nd semester sequence of general bio and general chem. Unlike all of you guys, I'm coming into pre-med after sampling pre-nursing. My profs (for bio 103 and a&p) and other pre-meds encouraged me to "join the other side" based on my performance and interests. Bio 103 and Chem 103 were fun for me, but now that I'm aware of the necessity of getting great grades I'm being anal about everything. I am way more laid back than some of my more driven cohorts, and I hope I carry the "gee, chemistry is fun" attitude with me next semester (which for some reason seems to be an okay attitude as a pre-nursing student, but it is not an okay attitude for a pre-med student. Sorry for perpetuating stereotypes).

Med Schools don't give a **** about precalculus, your college is only making you take that class because your a stupid idiot who was in geometry senior year, who the fk cares about high school courses.

@katiluvyou69
If you are not going to be helpful don't comment at all, but judging by your attitude you wont last too long until your banned.
@hospitalist1day
yeah you can definitely recover from getting a D or a C+ in pre-calculus just try and have an upward trend from here on out.

Well, what grades did you get in those two classes? How difficult was it to maintain those grades? Since you have exposure already, if you believe you can get A's with the three sciences in one semester, and have enough wiggle room in your schedule to put in more time than you think you need if it is more difficult than you predict, go for it. There is no need to rush with these classes, though, and keeping as many A's as possible is your first priority.

How well did I do? I'm not saying.:meanie: But it was fun.
I was really hoping to hear from people who have actually taken 3 science classes and scored As. Oops - I didn't start a new thread, so I can't complain. But, based on my performance last and this semester (except for the pre-calculus, but I'll move on) I blithely believe I can do it. My cockiness this semester, however, is the cause of the C+.

Thanks for those questions, Seeker. Gosh, can't wait for the semester to begin. I'm getting bored...
