Can anyone on here shed some light on the osteopathic derm residencies and application process? What little information I found online is horribly vague. I'm just second year trying to gather information and I've found virtually nothing. Apparently their application process is seperate/different from the match?

Each program will have its own quirks. Some will take you after an intern year, some would prefer you to have completed another residency first. Best bet is to contact each on individually.

Any idea where to search for it? most of the DO derm threads I've found are real short and don't provide much info.

I'm looking for a 3rd or 4th year that may have already gathered some of this info or an intern on their way into derm.

I know I need to just contact each program individually (which I plan on doing) but I'd like to get some student perspectives

Thanks for the link Kuba, still seems like I'm gonna have to contact the programs individually to get any real info.

kinda frustrating that the whole process hasn't been standardized

Do you have any specific questions? I know a lot about the Derm match. I have a few friends that successfully matched as well as some that are trying this year. And I know a lot personally about the West Palm Beach program.

I'm looking for any programs that match straight into derm, or combined TRI/derm. It seems like too much of a gamble to go into a TRI and then apply to derm. I would imagine there would be many students gunning for the TRI then gunning for the 1-2 derm spots, making it doubly competitive and then what would you do after the TRI if you didn't match?

As far as I know, this does not exist like it does in the ACGME match. You cannot match straight out (you can only apply during your TRI year). I think the only exception is if you match into a combined IM/Derm program.

Do you know which schools have the IM/DERM program? I'm in Oklahoma (as I assume you are) and would be more interested in the KCOM or TCOM residencies because of location, but I don't know if its worth it taking a chance through a TRI

hey kuba,

what kind of comlex scores did your friends have? (the ones that matched derm, and the ones applying now) and do you know if they did derm research?

I have also mentored a number of students who had stellar credentials and jumped thru the research hoops and all the rotations, published research articles, and did NOT get into a derm residency. It can be a crap shoot sometimes. There is always the group of who knows the important people in the program..

How do you get derm research in the first place?

I've had several friends go through it and can say its definitely a shady process getting into DO derm. Lots of favoritism and its really all about "who you know." You will need to make contacts EARLY in medical school, keep in touch, and let them know how interested you are. Keep in mind some programs give you NO SALARY and you will need to moonlight to survive (hence the requirement to have finished FM or IM).

A related note to you question: Touro affiliate St. John's Episcopal has a FM/Derm program in Queens that accepts you straight into both right from the start. 6 years of training (which sucks, but isnt any different than a long fellowship)

I emailed the program at KCOM and VCOM, both of which you have to have completed your internship (not sure if you have to complete it or be in the process, it seems you would be in the process if you interview in the fall and match in december, can anyone shed some light?)

I haven't gotten as much info back from KCOM yet, but VCOM said it has 4 TRI spots and 2 for derm. Currently only two of those in the internship are interested in the derm program, as I guess there are other spots that require an internship first. The person I emailed never really said, but implied that getting one of those internship spots would be pretty crucial to getting one of the derm spots. She also said those two were also applying to other derm spots besides theres.

Does anyone think it is worth while to take the USMLE? If it is almost impossible to match allo derm, shouldn't I just focus on the one test?

A little off topic, but how do you survive if you match into a non-funded program (Pacific Hospital/COMP for example)?

I would guess that you have to moonlight extensively, or maybe have rich parents, or maybe find some sort of student loan type of deal (not that any of us need more loans)

Hi Kuba, I saw your post from a couple years ago about dermatology and that you knew alot about the West palm beach derm program. Do you happen to know if they require an IM residency prior to getting into the derm program?

The D.O. dermatology match process is going to be changing into an actual match sometime soon. I believe this will benefit the applicants. Having gone through the process and matching this year, getting into a D.O. derm program is not impossible but takes persistence. You must be willing to explore all possible options. If you feel you have a weaker application, do not give up hope but maybe focus on the newer programs, as they tend to be slightly less competitive and typically have less rotators and stay in touch with them. In the D.O. world, program directors and residents want to know you will be a good student, that you are not a weirdo, and are someone they feel they will be able to stand to work closely with the next 3 years. Relax, be yourself and you all will do great!

I've never hear of IM/Derm, FM/Derm combined residencies. So are you guaranteed the derm spot after IM or FM or is it some type of pyramidal program.

the ones I've seen are handshake deals. If you're in the derm program (3 years from now) you know before you even match there. and they never have someone "not" match into derm after 3 years. So definitely not a pyramid scheme, but technically the room is there to "forget" to match you if somehow you ended up being a dud over the first 3 years. but AFAIK thats never happened.

The IM/Derm program at Cuyahoga Fall was a combined residency. You matched directly into a 6 year IM/Derm residency. I cannot speak on behalf of the other programs but I would suspect they would be similar. The Cuyahoga Falls program I know did not accept someone into IM/Derm this year and rumor has it that they are looking to drop the IM requirement and will match directly into derm.
