I know it's a small target audience, but are there any other D.O. Ophthalmology applicants on here? If so, anyone have any luck in the SFMatch this year? If so, congrats! From the sounds of reading posts on here, it was a very competitive year...even for well qualified M.D.'s. I personally focused my attention on the small # of Osteopathic programs where I felt I had my best shot of ultimately becoming an Ophthalmologist. After spending time rotating at some of the programs, I was really pleased with the quality of training. So, like others, I'm very anxious for the upcoming match on the 8th.
It seemed like a lot of the same people at the different interviews, so chances are we would have met. Good luck to all, and let's hope for the best.

Good luck to both of you. I know first hand that it is an intimidating task to apply for one of such a limited number of spots. I ended up matching at my #1 choice program, so I've been on cloud 9 this whole week. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions down the road. If you haven't already, I would look into setting up away rotations at some of the programs. It's pretty much a must in the D.O. world. Take care.

about the St. Johns program, its true the area is not the best. as for the years, you must do an AOA internship then a year of family practice (it used to be a year of general surgery) then 3 years of ophtho.

Does anyone know about the Erie ophtho program?

I hear its a pretty good program. When I asked about it, I was told that it was only 5 years old, but that they have matched graduating residents at big name fellowships. They get a lot of trauma exposure, but I also heard the residents do 6 months of peds and they hated it. Hope that helps, and good luck on the match.

Dad and Uncle are both DOs...but not ophthalmologist (one radiologist, one family practice).

Check out Michigan... The Detroit Osteopathic Ophthalmology Consortium Residency is a very good program... ... you're basically rotating in all the Detroit area hospitals. Lots of volume.. inner city yet suburban patients as well...etc.

PCOM is good as well... plus I believe you do stuff with Wills.

i have a family friend ophth who is a DO. He also went on to do a competitive fellowship in retina

this may be a dumb question but someone asked me and i didnt know the answer. can a resident switch from an osteopathic ophthalmology program to an allopathic ophthalmology program?

theoretically yes, but allopathic spots opening up are very rare...and I imagine it would take a lot for that program to just let anyone jump in...they may fill from within the hospital (different field if a first year spot) or another MD residency spot if the candidate has good reasons.

either way, openings at MD allopathic spots are very rare

i'm a DO and did my residency at West Virginia University, an MD program. now i'm at Harvard doing an Oculoplastics Fellowship. hang in there and don't sell yourself short. i've yet to be looked down upon being a DO applying to an MD program. my 2 cents. good luck.

I was looking at this list and I don't see any ophth under PCOM. Does that just mean they didn't have an open spot this year so they didn't accept applications?

I also didn't see St. John's in NY in this list either. Am I missing something?

According to this, they have 9 ophth residents... so I'm assuming three per year. ? And yes.. .they are at Wills too. 🙂

Hospitals

  • Wills Eye Hospital
  • Temple - Episcopal Hospital
  • Frankford Hospitals
  • Crozer - Keystone Health System
  • Roxborough Healthcare Center, PCOM (office-based medical care)
Checked your link... check 118562 PCOM/PHILADELPHIA CONSORTIUM
PHILADELPHIA.... for ophthalmology had three spots, all filled.

As for DO going allopathic, they closed the Interfaith residency a few years back, and SUNY Downstate absorbed the residents. Not sure if that counts, though. 🙂

The place where the interfaith residency was is now the main site for the St.John's Osteopathic Ophth residency.

When I interviewed at St. Johns I asked to spend an afternoon in their clinic, just as an observer. I recommend you do the same, as it was very helpful in my decision-making process. Also, as one of the above posters recommended, don't shy away from MD programs (I matched at one)- but do be selective which ones you want develop a relationship with.

Best of luck.

Are you all talking about St. Johns Hospital in Queens NY?
Dont quote me on this but i recently heard my uncle who is a doctor got transferred to another hospital because St Johns closed down? Also if its the one near queens blvd ( i live near there ) and it does seem to be closed the few times i passed by. However im not 100% sure so anyone asking should check it out online or something if they have a website.
