Congrats ItsGavinC for winning the election for president of the United States.

Now on a more serious note, does anybody know about becoming class President of thier D-School?

Do they still do this? What are the president's responsibilities? Is it competitive? Is their an election/campaigning or is that job appointed?

This is something that really interests me. Anybody have any experience?

Thanks

I think that you have to have fairly good grades and somehow find a way to publish something while you are in school. That I heard is a big plus, not only for becoming class president, but allowing yourself a better chance to pursue a specialty farther along the road

Our class just raised our hands to vote on it after lunch one day. It's no big deal, really. Pretty much it's just like in high school - a popularity/beauty contest. It's not like the position has any real responsibility, anyway. The only real important position, at least at my school, seems to be the school ASDA representative.

BTW No offense, all you class presidents out there. 🙂

Being the school ASDA representative is something im interested in doing. Is that similar to class president, a beauty/popularity contest. Or is there a lot more to it?

Shawn:

I'm don't remember if you're in dental school yet or are you still waiting for good news on December 1, 2003? At any rate, if you're serious about running for D1 Presidency, then here are my advice:

1) Be popular, talk to everyone in your class
2) Be active and creative to bring everyone in your class together, whether it's having parties or build a class website
3) Most important, make everyone your friend
4) Be resourceful, you must know everything about everything when it comes to your school

To become the first year Class President, it's pretty much a popularity contest since everyone had just met everyone. An election will be held, nomination may or may not accompany the process (you may have to nominate yourself). For me last year (when I was a first year), I built a class web site for my class in March (before I started dental school) and about 30 out of 99 of us met over our class web prior to our matriculation and orientation.

In doing so, I was kind of known as "the one" that brought everyone together. Then after school had started, we had two plus months to get to know everyone and then Class Officers were elected. There were three other candidates besides myself that ran for the President position and I received the majority of the votes.

If you asked me, I strongly believe that my interpersonable personality and the class web site had me earn all those votes.

As a past Class President, I strongly encourage you to run as it takes a lot of patience as well as time management on your part. It is truly a rewarding experience as well as a great CV booster.

Good luck!

thanks for your advice Yah-E! I'll be seriously considering it next year.

EXACTLY what our class did. Of course, our class is the first, so nobody really new what to do, so I'm glad another class was in the same boat.

ASDA reps are COOL.

I was thrashed when I ran for president of my class. Of course, we voted after 1.5 weeks of class, and I don't think anybody knew me then. Then again, maybe it was BECAUSE they knew me. Hmmm... 😀

Supernumerary's class is a class of ~30 people in a Bachelor's program where no one really cared who was the President.

[DISCLAIMER: what I have posted above is a bunch of nonsense. It's is not only not accurate, but also refering to the incorrect person. Please disregard! what I have posted below this point is fine.]

When I was at Midwestern University in the Master's program (Post-Bac), we had 15 of us in the program and the school wanted us to have a President for our group to attend University student meetings....guess what...no one cared, the guy who took the President's position got it because no one wanted it.

Dental school and professional programs elections are much more elaborate.

Gavin, your situation can be the fact that you're the first class of the school and due to the small class size.

People know me much better now, they've seen the work I've done in regards to getting our class ready for NBDE I, they KNOW my devotion to dentistry and being a succesful dental student, hopefully I'll make a better run of it next year--IF I decide to run again.

Who knows. Two straight years of losing really does wonders for one's self esteem.

Yah-E is right on about getting elected class pres during first year. Class president & all the other positions in first year elections are a total popularity contest. By fourth year, the people getting elected are usually the ones who care or will do the work when delegated.

ASDA rep is a cool position, I held it for a few years. Your official role is to represent your school at the national ASDA House of Delegate meeting. When you return, you have to take care of many little chores at your school. 1) Submitting membership information for all of your chapter's members 2) Participate in recruiting members, if your chapter is recruited & not automatic billing 3) Keeping members updated of national dental student issues 4) Keeping in touch with your regional trustee about your chapter's activities 5) Helping out with chapter activities

It is a travel position. The national ASDA meeting is supposed to be in New Orleans & San Francisco in 2004 & 2005. I've met and partied in Orlando & Portland with lots of students from dental schools around the country, these meetings are a blast. Lots of charged dental business ("ASDA Fever") during the day, have fun at night. Through this position, I've wrote for ASDA news a few times, done the stuff I mentioned above, and picked up random responsibilities at my ASDA chapter (part treasurer, part fund raising person, part newsletter coordinator, and attending random dental school meetings, and too many other things I can't remember anymore.)

Elections for this position at our school are done by candidates submitting in writing why they think they would be good for this position. But the selection process probably differs from school to school. When you get to school, get involved with ASDA and find out from the current rep (their names are posted on the ASDAnet.org website) and ask them how the rep is picked at your school.

I'm not denigrating your position as president, Yah-E. I'm sure at some schools the pres probably does important stuff; at my school, he doesn't. And whether or not the class president actually does anything doesn't really matter if all you want it for is a CV. (Again, not saying this describes you.) I was just pointing out that if Shawn is looking for a way to really get involved in things, there might be better options than being class president. 🙂

Don't fret if you don't have any of Yah-E's quality for winning election. As our class' president has none of the above😀 😀
If it's your destiny to be president, you might get elected.

And beware of dogs if you are in CA schools. The "RECALL" fashion is high here. People might vote to recall you if they hate you.

Shawn,

i believe you do posess the qualities needed to be a class Prez. If we both go to NYU, and you still decide to do it, i'll vote for you.
Having read some of Andy's posts from last year, i remember that he put LOTS of time and effort into his position and worked really hard. Nova is a relatively new school and a lot of thinks still need to be established.
having said that, i am sure the large class size at NYU or any other school would make things a lot more complicated.

good luck to you

Comet

Thanks Comet,

I appreciate the kind words.

I hope you did not take my last post as offensive because it was non-inteneded. I know that you weren't "denigrating" me. Aren't you in a BS program at Midwestern? I want to make sure? Or are you already in Dental school?

Supernumerary:

I apologize, please disregard what I have posted earlier. I thought you were someone else....

What dental school are you at?

Shawn:

I tried reply to your PM, but your inbox is full. So I'm posting my response to your question here:

Our Public Class website is the same website that you see all of our pictures on. It's a MSN Group website. Easy to maintain and it's free. Only downfall, not too much web space, only 3MB. For $19.95/year, you'll get additional 27MB (30MB total).
