I am an incoming D3 student with a strong interest in orthodontics. I have worked as an orthodontic assistant for 18 years, and I am hoping to apply to orthodontic residency in the future.
At this point, I have approximately five strong letters of recommendation, over 100 volunteer hours, and a 3.478 GPA, ( D3/D4 classes no longer impacted GPA they are P/F). I do not currently have research experience.
I wanted to ask if anyone has recommendations for strengthening my application moving forward. Also, are there any orthodontic programs known to review applications more holistically rather than screening applicants out based mainly on GPA?
My personal statement explains the context behind my GPA, including working two jobs and managing significant financial responsibilities while in dental school. I am currently 38 years old, and with that has come responsibilities that have shaped my path, but my commitment to orthodontics remains very strong.
