Which one would you choose to go to and why?

Good luck getting much feedback on Dalhousie. It may be one of the least-known (or perhaps best-kept secret) schools that accept US applicants. From my limited knowledge, I have heard nothing but great things about the school. Small class-size, excellent faculty.

I personally would choose Dal over Temple, but I lived in Nova Scotia for a couple of years and loved the area and the people. VERY cold winters and short summers, though.

Dalhousie hands down. I met a few grads from there during my residency, and visited the school when I went to Cape Breton a couple years ago (by the way, add Cape Breton to the list of places to visit - beautiful!!!a train ride away from Dalhousie.
anyways, back to the issue, my opinion is Dalhousie hands down. More technologically advanced, better student instructor ratio. One huge complaint from Temple is the hassle with obtaining patients in order to meet requirements and the practice of having to pay$$$ for some patients. At Dal I've heard patients are aplenty and scheduling chair time is not a problem. In terms of accessing the city, it's more expensive to fly in to Halifax then Philly. i can't comment on comparing housing prices. Now Halifax is not the trendy city like Montreal or vancouver, and philly may be a more fun place to live. but in terms of dental education, i agree it is a great environment to be trained for gp, or specialty.

Im going into my senior year at Temple. If what the two posts about Dal say then Id go there. Temple is short on staff, Its a pain trying to schedule chairs, You have to pay if your patients dont pay. Temple has a dean that couldnt care about the students etc etc etc on and on. Seems like things are always broken. Try doing an amalgam with no water for your highspeed or a high speed suction that doenst work.

dalhousie probably. You do have to deal with the whole Canada/ US switch over, but I have a few friends there and they love it, plus you don't have to deal with a lot of the bull crap, red tape, stupid classes, that we take here in the US. Plus it is quite a bit cheaper and cost of living is preety decent too. Small class size, very clinically oriented.
I almost went there myself but Vegas was a no brainer for me.

Dalhousie.. Starts mid September, 4 month break between 1-2 yr, 2 1/2 months between 2-3 yr. Not bad.

dalhousie - I'm canadian so it would have been cheaper

man that summer vacation is enough to convince me for dalhousie.....especially if you want that time for Boards prep.

Like I said in the other thread you started, Dalhousie is in a great area, but it's boring as fuk..........just ask yourself if you can do it for 4 years?

If the answer is yes, then goto Dalhousie no questions asked. It'll be much cheaper and it has a great reputation!!!

This post is obviously from someone who is never happy and complains about everything:

1. Name me one school in the US that doesnt have a staff shortage??

2. We have to pay for our patients? So what happens in the real world when you graduate??? All patients are gonna pay right away with no hassles, right? Perhaps in the drug-induced utopia you believe you're about to go into. Instead, why dont you accept reality and develop the habits to deal with these problems now, cause when you graduate, you're on your own buddy.

3. However, you did hit the head on the nail with the Dean. Administration at Temple sucks. But tell me one school where the students feel that the administration doesnt care about them???

All Im saying is that the above complaints and the exact same complaints that come from EVERY dental school...usually from students who dont realize this and complain about everything and anything and are never happy.

wow, interesting that some students are accepting of the fact that they have to pay for patients. i thought tuition was enough, now patients. agreed, there is a huge staff shortage - although part-time clinical instructors are not in shortage at many dental schools - the shortage is more in traditional academic positions (full time). in this regard, from what i understand in clinic the student clinical instructor ratio is not as conducive to learning at temple than most other programs.

You could say that I complain.. Or you could ask most anyone in my class how they feel about Temple. They'd all have the same compliants. Im just giving him the honest facts about Temple straight up. Having been in the clinics for a year. What year are you if you dont mind me asking? If you love Temple that's great. Id say there are better options. In the real world most of us would not have patients like what you get at Temple. You can do everything right and still get stuck with the bills. A senior I just talked to today has to pay a patients chart off because the insurance company sent the money to the patient. Which the patient should have brought to the school to pay for his dental work. The patient instead just cashed the check. If you wanna go to Temple thats awesome you'll get to do alot of basic dentistry. (You just gotta bust ass and put up with alot of bull****) You get to do alot of extractions 150 compare that to a friend of mine who went to Nova he did 45.
