I officially start my summer today. Thought this day would never come...
  • Started studying in the middle of may, really started cracking down in the middle of June
  • Purchased the Destroyer and Achiever and Topscore
  • Destroyer: Went through once on the last week before the exam. I was nailing about 80% of all the bio and orgo and about 90% of gchem and practically all of the math. it’s a good way to test yourself and see whether you know the material or if you should keep studying. (Rating: 7/10)
  • Achiever and Topscore i did over and over until i understood why i made the mistakes and exactly what info i was missing. (Rating: 8/10)
  • Kaplan Course --pros: shadowed teacher who was a dental student at my local dental school; good resources; gives you the push to study --cons: costs a buttload (Rating: 3/10)
My scores:

Bio - 20
G Chem - 21
O CHem - 19 (didnt know how i did that)
PAT - 24
Rc - 20
QR - 23
TS : 20
AA: 21 (91.0%)

BIO – I agree with the fact that everything is game on this section. Make sure you leave no stone unturned. The more you study, the less of a chance for a perplexing question to come up and completely throw you off guard. The questions weren’t too hard in general, just made you think a little if you didn’t know it off the top of your head. I suggest you sub in the ap cliffs bio book for the Kaplan bio section in the blue book. I had a picture that I had to determine where it would be in the body. I ended up marking 5 questions on this section.

G Chem – This question is very conceptual. All calculations are written out which I liked. Doesn’t go into as much detail as I expected. There were a few tricky questions here and there but don’t fret. Just make sure you know how to do Lewis structures and your basic concepts. Marked 5 on this section

O Chem – I was completely astounded and rather pissed at myself with the result I got on this section. I felt the most confidence in this section of tall the sciences. But what can I do, I guess I’ll have to settle for a 19. Just know your reactions and your basic reasons why. Didn’t see a single “crazy” or out of the blue reaction. Marked 2 on this section

PAT – I just loved this section. This was a lot easier than Achiever AND TS. I never really sat down and practiced this exam. The Keyholes I typically have difficulty with, but they were very simple and straightforward. The TFE I’m usually pretty good with these and today was no different. Angles were nothing like the achiever or TS version. I don’t know if it was my computer or the program I had, but angles were as smooth as a baby’s gluteus maximus. And I put practically every piece of paper, pencil, or ID card at some point during this section. The proctor also never mentioned anything as she passed by, so I guess she didn’t really care. Cube counting is like any other cube counting. And finally, pattern folding had a couple of tricky ones, but that was about it. Nothing really mind bending.

RC – First off, I loathe this section. And I never practiced this after my first 2 practice exams I took in early June. I pretty much stuck with this method I used on the practice exams. This was, I would read as much as possible in the first passage until I got bored or I lost concentration while I was reading it. I would typically get through about 6-7 paragraphs (1/2 the passage) and then I would move onto the first 6-7 questions of the passage. By the time I was done with those, I found there was a term in the next question that I didn’t come across, so I would go back to reading the passage until I was done. Finally I would finish the passage and answer the rest of the questions. IMHO, I find the method of looking at the questions and then backtracking as being a little too risky. For me this method is rather dependable and will pretty much get you solid scores and maybe some eye popping ones if you are really good at it. These are just my 2 cents. And for those of you who are scared of the tone questions, don’t fret, as they are pretty simple and I only had 12 total questions of this kind.

QR – When I was heading into this section, I thought there was going to be 20 trig questions and 20 long a$$ word problems like the horror stories I was reading here on SDN. In reality, I had maybe 3 trig questions and word problems that had very simple calculations. I prepped for this section by doing half of DAT destroyer and in particular the sections for Trig and Permutation calculations, since I didn’t know how to do these. An hour before the exam, I quickly remembered some trig functions and the perm. Equation. I wrote these down as soon as I got into the center with my laminated sheets. Plus, if I ever got into any trouble with the trig functions, I would algebraically attempt to solve the problem; ended up working wonders for me. There was one question I didn’t know how to do and another I didn’t know how to attack at the time. This section was a lot of fun just like PAT. I’m typically pretty good with algebra and all that jazz, so studying for it wasn’t a big concern.

For everyone who is taking this exam in the upcoming weeks and months make sure you go over every little bit of info over and over and over again. I wish I could go back and really study for those sciences, now that I know what the exam looks like. But, IMO, a big factor of your score is based on whether you can identify the traps and the little details that differentiate between the right and wrong answer. Of course this is all interlinked with the fact of whether you know your material or not. Just make sure you are constantly aware of what the question is asking for. This exam is LONG and it can take quite a toll on you, so don’t lose your concentration. Also, heading into that room with a good amount of confidence will do wonders. You all have studied and invested a large amount of time into this exam and with adequate preparation, you will not do poorly unless you tell yourself that you will. And finally, I promise you all that you will find questions that will have you undecided but make sure you keep your head high and keep on truckin’.

Finally, I wanted to know what everyones input is on these scores. Plus i'm an entering junior this fall and my gpa is pure crap with a number of 2.9. Of course, I will b putting my hardest effort into getting a straight 4.0 for this year (hopefully bring that piece up to a 3.2), but I understand if will not get in next year when I apply. So I am willing to invest another year into this bad boy. Thank you all for your input and all of your help. Damn does it feel good to be done with this. Good luck to everyone.

Now time to watch some Entourage. Long live Johnny Drama!!!!

hey u watch entourage 2? this past weeks episode was kinda weak...turtle's a character!! anyway..solid scores you did amazing. So the qr isn't as bad as everyone says eh? thats def! an inspiration. If had to choose btwn topscore or achiever helping you out the most for the actual dat test..what would you pick?? please share your advice with the rest of us SDNers. Gud luck to you on the rest of your process!!

ps. I think Ari is the that makes the show!!😀😀

awesome score!!! i love your QR😍Finally you broke the chain...people were getting great science score & low QR..made me worried a lil bit. Do you mind posting your topscore & achiever score plzzz? i wanna compare it with mine😀 Thanks!

Awesome job!!! Enjoy the summer!

What do you mean by backtracking? About how many times do you look back at the passage usually?

What do you mean by "algebraically attempt" to solve trig fx?

entourage rocks. but i ahve to disagree with you. i think drama is the underlying heart and soul of that crew.

like i said in the pm, if i had to choose it would def be topscore. i find to test a larger variety of material then achiever. and i love the fact that you can reset ur scores and do them over again.

and on a general note, just keep exploring as much material as you can on the bio.

for the qr. just make sure u are fast when it comes to converting a word problem into an algebraic equation. because solving the problem for the answer after the conversion is very simple.

for my practice tests i pretty much took them when i was all dont preparing with kaplan. i was doing destroyer at the same time as i was doing these

my achiever scores, i didnt do the rc for all 3. and i didnt do the pat nor the qr for the 3rd exam. so i wont be able to give you my AA score. but the rest is here.

Test 1: Test 2: Test 3:
Bio 15 Bio 17 Bio 17
GC 17 GC 17 GC 17
OC 19 OC: 18 OC 18
TS 17 TS: 17 TS 18
QR 21 QR 22
PAT 18 PAT 21

My topscores i took after every achiever test. so i wold end up alternating. only did the sciences in this program and the pat for one test. i took the bio and orgo again after i reviewed what i got wrong about a week after (thats what the second score is right after the slash).

Test 1: Test 2: Test 3:
Bio 19 / 21 Bio 20 / 24 Bio 19 / 21
GC 19 GC 17 GC 17
OC 17 / 20 OC: 18 /25 OC 22 / 21
PAT 23

to tell you the truth. all of my science scores were very similar to what i received on the kaplan practice tests towards the end of my studying.

What do you mean by "algebraically attempt" to solve trig fx?

Im sorry to make it all so complicated. it was late at night and i didnt feel like rereading it all.

By backtracking i meant the typical method of looking at the questions and then trying to find it in the passage.

when i was doing the exam i pretty much read the passage in two attempts. i read half in the first attempt, answered as many questions as i possibly could when i got bored of reading and then i read the rest of the passage when i couldnt answer anymore. i read while writing the subject of each paragraph on the sheet. of course as i was answering the detailed questions, i would have to look back to a specific paragraph. but i was nailing those tone questions like there was no tomorrow.

and this whole idea of algebraically solving for trig functions is like this. pretty much i take a value for x (say pi/6 = 30 degrees) and plug it into the equation. since i know the basic values of the trig functions of this angle such as sin(pi/6) = 1/2 and cos(pi/6) = sqrt3/2 and all of its reciprocals, i pretty much plug in these values and attempt to solve for the equation (i wish i remembered the problem on my exam b/c this part really helped me). granted this will take a lot of time, and i really suggest using this only when are done with all the other problems that u know how to solve. but it can work if u know what u are doing.

i hope that helps. write to me if u have any trouble.

if anyone has anyhting they want to know about the test or need any sort of clarification, i am more than willing to help.

nah im not applying until next year. im going to be a junior in college. plus my gpa sucks so ill need to bring that up before anything else.

👍nice scores...you'll def get into a good school if you work on you GPA...what helped yau most with bio?

well done. Same thing happened to me in O chem I got 19 and I thought it was one of my strong subjects! I was expecting over 20 at least. Even after that section I felt I did really well. I mean I had time to check all my answers and they seemed right. Guess I fell for all the answer traps.

thanks.. seriously i only marked two of my answer choices and i thought i was golden after finishing it up. i only spent 2 weeks prepping for orgo. so a 19 from that isnt too shabby.

I got those scores once and then I woke up. Totally sucked. I face death in about 14.75 hours as I take the DAT.

lol im sure youll do great. the exam isnt really as hard as everyone says it is. i mean if i did decent on it, practically anyone can.

Thanks for clarifying. I tried it, it didn't improve much, I think I have short term memory problem or something. But thanks though.

hey Saaz55,
how did you study? and how long (time length wise)...you said about 2 weeks for o chem and is that just reading the kaplan book and doing problems? how many hours did you put in each day? thanks!

sorry to hear that. one thing i can tell you is, on the real exam it is very easy to segregate each paragraph and know what each one is talking about. good luck on ur exam and ur studying.

hey Saaz55,

yea for ochem i started 2 weeks before my exam. but i pretty much spent a majority of my time on o chem and nothing else. typically i would wake up around 12. go to the local lib like around 2. and come home around 9 with maybe an hour or hour and a half of break with lnch time. i stalked up on energy drinks during this time. since i tend to be very lethargic when it comes to studying. also before i go to bed i would go over flashcards i made on my own for bio or i would go over the kaplan flashcards.

during the 2 weeks of orgo, i would read about 2-3 chapters of kaplan per day. and make flashcards of all reactions and some important info as i read along. when i was about halfway through kaplan i began doing destroyer and tried to asnwer approx. 75 questions per day. i made sure i went over every right and wrong answer i got. i only did this once. plus when it came to the roadmaps i would cover all the products of each arrow and slowly uncover them as i got them right. i did this maybe 4/5 times throughout the 2 weeks for each roadmap. towards the end of it. i became better at my reactions not because of kaplan and what i read but rather by learning what my mistakes were. for topscore and achiever i constantly redid problems and made sure i understood what the answer is and why.

as for bio, i jus memorized all of kaplan by making flashcards. i made a totale of 800 flashcards about 50 per chapter. then iw ould go through destroyer and achiever and TS by the end of the two weeks to know what i was missing and to get myself familiar with the question format.

kaplan isnt as bad as everyone says it is as long as you can draw your own conclusions based on a few pieces of info they give you. if u have trouble doing that, just use ap cliffs or schaums. it will make ur life a lot easier.

and g chem, i just red kaplan once. i only spent about a week on this. but i rmemeber a majority of what i learned from freshman year. so i only concentrated on things like galvanic cells and nernst eq.

so all in all, i would spend 7 hours at the lib with and 1-1.5 hrs break in between. and then that was it. i wasnt in touch with my friends. but it was all good, cuz they understood. so im glad i ahd friends like that. of course i would hang out with them maybe once or twice a month.

saaz55,
yeah i know what you mean...my life is about to get real intense. im sorry with all the questions and all but i have about the same stats as you and making a 21 on my DAT would be like a dream come true! I just finished summer school and ive been reading kaplan blue book and whatnot im still on biology though and its only been 5 days! i was wondering how much they actually talk about plants, behavior, and taxonomy and whatnot because these chapters are long and detailed at the same time. im good with all the systems and cell biology and stuff but there were some posts earlier that said they talked about in vitro, cloning and all this other stuff...where do you get that information from? do you just have to read up on it or what? thanks so much, again im sorry for all the questions! and thanks for helping out!

lols. no problem with all the questions. and when it comes to bio. u wont be able to finsih it in a week. i spent about a mount and 2 weeks on bio. and thats like making flashcards and going through them and what not. they talk about plants somewhat in depth. but the cell bio stuff was one of the major topics on the exam. make sure u know all that. plus there are random questions that arent to specified to a specific subject like the endcrine system. but rather u are asked to kind of apply the info to the question. dont worry. this isnt as severe as the mcat. its very straightforward. so dont u worry too much about. just make sure u are capable of applying the info and not freeze up if the question is asked in a different way. that is key in ur learning process in my opinion.

and as for that invitro garbage, i didnt get a single question like that but i had my fair share of odd ones. i suggest if u ever read any crazy thing like that on sdn. u just look it up on wiki or something and be prepared for it. plus, i can practically guarantee u will have crazy topics. but the thing that separates the very high scorers from the middle of the bunch is whether u are able to break down the question and be able to give the best response. and another thing u should do is be able to recooperate from a hard question that might deflate ur confidence and just keep on going.
