this is probably an easy one but i want to make sure how to name a cyclohexane with 2 methyls, one propyl para to the methyls and ethyl meta to the methyls.

wouldn't you give priority to the propyl since it is a longer chain or do you give priority to the carbon attached to the methyls because it has two carbons attached to it?

You number the ring to give the sequence of substituents the lowest possilbe #'s total. So..the methyls would be 1,2, and the ethyl would be 3, as the propyl would be 4. Now, when writing out the name, you alphabatize the substituents. So...3-ethyl-1,2-dimethyl-4propylcyclohexane. The "di" in "di-methyl" does not get included when alphabatizing. Hope that helps man.

my question is kind of unclear but i meant that one carbon has two methyls attached to it with the propyl para and ethyl meta. the answer is similar to what u said which is 3-ethyl-1,1-dimethyl-4-propylcyclohexane.

when you say lowest number possible, do you mean the SUM of the numbers?

so in this case it would be 3+1+1+4= 9
