I'm guessing a lot of other people (including me) go through anxiety while studying for the DAT.... are there any ways to cope with the anxiety? I mean while I'm studying, I'm so worried that I have only a month to study for this exam and I go ahead and run through everything as fast as possible. HELP!

It's official. I have no one to talk to about this anymore. I left this guy I was seeing a short while ago. Then I met someone new thereafter, but I left him too. Now I have no one to talk to about this. But, didn't someone say it's better to be alone than in bad company?? I'm so glad I have SDN!

I'm feeling really stressed out again. I'm determined to take this test in February, but I have work everyday plus school now. It's about 8pm and I have to worry about getting up around 6am for work. Feeling major anxiety. :scared:

You can't fall apart now. I mean think about it - all this work and you're going to let a test on things that you already know stop you from doing this? Remember we're all here to help you out. Sure it seems hard to you right now, but think about it - years from now, you're going to be in your dental clinic. It'll be definately worth it in the end. Sure you'll lose a couple nights of sleep but think about how fun it is going to be being a dentist. 👍

You are right. No quitting now. Thanks for the kick in the butt. I needed it. I know we can do this!

So it's nearly 2am, and I'm working on the last section of Orgo1A. Surprisingly, I'm not feeling so tired. I'm still fresh and hopefully I'll get all of this done when I get home from work tomorrow. Good luck to you all!

That was really nice and your right. We all go through so much stress, depression, looniness. The journey seems to hit the core of all our emotions. But, the destination is all worth it! NO social life, NO sleep, 😴 ahhhh sleep.

i agree man....hmm it's friday night and wat am i doingggg??? studying for datzzz yippieee...it's good to know that there are others out there on the same boat....

does anyone have any recommendations for TFE or KEYHOLES...man oh man these are a pain in me arse....

ohh ya and hmmm i need some advice!!! it's only been like 3 weeks since i've started studyin for DATS...however i dunno if this is even benefical or not...but i've been sitting in some extra classes at school..primarily classes like bio I and II...and chem I and II...urghhh i dunno i'm trying to give this my all...but wat ya'll think?!

It all depends on how well you want to do and how much time you actually have to do it and how much you actually know already. Personally, I'm weak in all areas so I have a lot of reviewing to do. Others have a strong foundation so they don't need to do much. As for the PAT section, what i've been told by many and by uberscorers is to get a lot of practice. And yes, we are all in the same boat. I'm staying in tonight too. It's too cold to go anywhere anyway tonight. I still can't seem to drop the Orgo just yet. I'm obsessed!!!

Alright my vacation is officially over... I have work the next 2 days and then I have to head up for training on Monday. This officially stinks.

My vacation ended this week too. I had to stay up later than usual and get less sleep. Thanks for the pep talk earlier. I'm here for you too. I'm totally tired of Orgo right so I'm switching to GenChem1A review now. I think we'll make the February deadline with a little bit of perseverance.

How are your schedules for this semester looking like? Do you guys have all the science class rage going or putting your feet up by taking non-science classes?

I'm taking 8 credit hours of science (Microbiology and Physics). The rest is a Literature class and a seminar.

What's so hard about QR? I mean is it that bad? I'm not really worried about this section. If its not QR, its more like RC and I know through years of standardized tests, that this is the *worst* section for me.

For me at least, QR was hard because I couldnt memorize it--that is,they can throw different arrangements of problems at you and just switch variables around,so you have to actually get how to set the problems up(if you get stuck with word problems). The trig formulas and conversions are memorizable obviously...DAT Destroyer has good QR practice but its clearly a crapshoot whether you'll get a test with zero word problems(like I had) or many word problems(like others have had).

I work Monday-Friday during the day and then classes at night Monday-Thursday. So glad it's a 3 day weekend!

Let's pray that I can finish GenChem1A by Monday night. I can do this d*amn it! That's it I'm dropping dance. 😡

Right now this is my major problem ... I am spending an hour on three problems ... not good.! I actual did better guessing vs the formula ... weird.😀

exactly what she said. lol

QR isnt something you can memorize & if you had a horrible math background (having a substitute teacher for the whole year in algebraI back in high school) you'll understand too!

and my schedule is..
Cell Bio, PhysicsII, OrgoII, Sociology, and this 1 credit elective course that i might drop. lol
&shadowing and tutoring on the side..

.. im gonna hate this semester.

ps. im studying bio now and im liking it a WHOLE lot better than QR. lol

Gosh, I've been so lazy today. Hopefully, GenChem1A won't be so bad as the Orgo1A review.

I was lazy yesterday, ONLY got a few problems done with QR and nothing else with the rest of my subjects. I think it's the weather (raining)

How are you doing with the ORG? How are you studying for all your sujects? Specially with such a HUGE schedule, are you reading a few chpts. say, 1 or 3 in each subject or completing one subject at a time then moving on?

I know I'm doing this all wrong, because it fries my brain, but I review a third of each subject before I move onto the next. Like I just finished a third of Orgo only. It takes forever doing it that way, but I end up really knowing it. My plan is to do Orgo and GenChem first then work on Bio and QR last since there's so much info for Bio.

Wow! I've forgotten a lot of my GenChem1A too. Geezus. Are you guys done with General Chemistry already?

I read it, but I have to re-read a lot of it too... it takes a while to stick but once it sticks, it should stick. I hated Acids and Bases.

Okay, almost done with 1/6th of GenChem1A review. I'm feeling so much better with GenChem than with the Orgo.

that sounds a lot like my saturday!!! didn't really touch the subject tests...nor the kaplan book...hmmm it was much too nice out...but i doubled up on my work load today...

honestly, wat matters the most is how much u absorb...not how much time is being spent...you'll get it sky blueee

To be honest a major part of the time feel I am walking away with not much remembered at times. Any good study smart tips?

Hmmm....I don't know if this is smart, but I do a lot I mean a lot of problems after each section or topic covered. It takes forever, but I end up not memorizing so much and walking away feeling like I really know what I had learned. I have notecards of just some basic concepts that I look at to refresh only.

The key to retaining information is to improve the quality of your study, not the quantity.

Most people can retain maximum focus for no more than an hour (and that is even pushing it). Work in bursts, take short breaks. If you feel overwhelmed and dont want to take a real break, at least shift into a mindless task that will help you later. I will share what I would do everytime my mind started to wander during ochem review.

Flash cards just didn't help me. Take full sheets of printer paper or ruled, it doesn't matter. Title the top of each sheet for one functional group (ie alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, ect.) and write down every possible reaction each group undergoes. That is, write out the starting material, use the reaction arrows (w/ reagents listed), and draw out the final product.

Use the examples from the kaplan book and find others from your old notes. Ask your ochem prof for examples if possible, use old exams, and so forth. This task consumes a good deal of time and requires little to no brain power. It is ideal for doing towards the end of a study session or when your brain is just out of focus. Trying to continue reading chapters and retaining info at this point will only waste your time - but writing out mindless reactions will greatly improve your available study resources for when you feel recharged and ready to retain.

Trust me, once you have solid examples pertaining to every group, you will be able to go through these separate sheets in a few minutes each at rapid and easily repetitive speeds. Before you know it, you will recognize pretty much any functional group/reaction type question that the DAT will throw at you (and expect at least 15/30 questions to be of this nature). The rest of the questions are just memorizing a few rules and unique reactions like diels-alder, grignard, aromaticity, so forth. ochem is less intimidating once you master all of the functional groups. Knowing functional group specifics is also a lot easier than trying to blindly memorize random reactions with no actual order.

This is just one example of how to utilize your time. Obviously if you're just starting to study for the day, don't go about writing down reactions, do it when you your brain is on cruise control.

Utilize as many help resources as you can. Ask upperclassmen pre-dents at your school, take a review course, study with friends, stay motivated.

Obviously what worked for me won't work for everyone, but the key point is not WHAT to study, rather HOW to study. Know your limits, get the most out of your time.

Good luck

This makes SO much sense! I find my mind going on crusie control and if I don't have a pencil in my hand joting down something "I need to know" I go to sleep. I am trying this one method right now making up questions for the topic and subtopic for each page then, answering them. I find I am retaining a little more while I read. (staying active) But, I am going to try this too specially on my O.Chem.
Thank you, many kudos.

Do you make up your own problems for each section? I do feel I learn more if I have a problem to solve while reading then, I am actively looking for the answers.

so i needed a little inspiration for the whole DAT-studying madness and took a road trip up to san francisco...visited uop and ucsf and i loved it! definitely gave me that extra push i needed and relieved some of my stress for a while...now back to studying.

I've been looking at my old notes and problems from the classes when I took them. It helps me do the problems really well, but it takes me a long time. I'm not sure how else I can do it. When I look at the Kaplan book it doesn't make much sense to me or it doesn't cover enough. I only use it as a guide. I just hope that I have enough time to do all this. I had today off, but I spent most of it celebrating my friend's birthday who also had the day off. I'm working on the first third of genchem right now.

Can somebody really give me a good swift kick in the behind? I'm really having trouble getting my motor going. I haven't looked at my DAT book since Thursday. I really need to get pumping... I can't concentrate. :scared:

I totally understand! I was feeling that way too, but try to not look at the overall picture. You'll get overwhelmed. Divide your work into bite-size chunks, and you'll feel like you're making progress. You can do it Cybor!!! I know you can. And remember what you had told me about how sweet it will be once we reach our end goal of becoming a dentist. Just imagine that. And all this hardwork along the way will only make it much more sweeter once we have it. I promise you my face will have a permanent smile on it, because this journey is definitely not easy especially since you and I both have work and school. I feel you. But I know You can do it!!! 👍

Still working on 1/6th of GenChem1A Review. 🙁 But I need to go to sleep for work tomorrow.

I can't seem to get past reading atoms, electron, protons definitions over and over. I feel like a broken record or rather scratched CD dating myself there. 😀 Taking a 10 min. Break. I start my Organic II class tonight ain't that a good laugh!

Gosh, I haven't even gotten to Organic II yet. I gotta finish GenChem1A first before I can even go there. GenChem is a lot easier than Orgo, but very tedious.

I'm still working on 1/6th of GenChem1A. Yikes! Do you guys find yourselves eating a lot while studying?? I'm like always munching on something.

I find myself finding ways to grow gray hairs. I'm going to go all out tomorrow. I've been fatigued as of late... I had to drive 20 miles to training for work, only to find out it was cancelled. I have to waste a Saturday and go to training again (possibly to the same place 20 miles away) My semester started today and it seems okay. I just want to stay on top of things at this point. I need to find a daily schedule. Of course, emphasis on DAT studying. 😎

Wow, I have a lot of tight spots throughout my semester. Looks like I have to use my time extremely efficiently... If I plan on taking the DATs the first week of March, the second week of March is worse - I have an essay and 2 tests three consecutive days in a row. How's everybody's schedule looking right now?

What do you think is the hardest part of Gen. Chemistry? I find myself having a very hard time with Acids and Bases. I'm going to have to read that chapter over again. The phases of matter chapters are probably the most easy chapters, since all the stuff is memorization. I'm going to Redox Reactions tonight and probably the nuclear stuff (like isotopes and of the like).

This is extremely frustrating... I loved Chemistry before but now I am cringing at the thought of it. Electrochemistry is something that I barely covered in all the times I took Gen. Chem (in HS and undergrad). The semester beginning is not really helping...

My schedule is pretty tight too. I just got home from my class. For Gen. Chemistry I have a hard time getting down the precipitation reactions. That stuff confuses me.

Do we have to memorize all the solubility rules? There are quite a lot of them.

I don't think you need to memorize them. I guess you could just know the most basic. Looks like you're making a lot of progress in your studies. I haven't done that much at all.

I haven't done much either. I have to look at Gen. Chemistry all over again because I am extremely afraid that I picked up on only half of the things I read. I'm most likely taking a practice test tomorrow because I haven't taken one and I don't have any idea as to how the questions are. (If I do, I'll think about posting my scores)

I have all of Biology left (I'm not worried about this as much because its a lot of memorization and after nearly 10 Biology classes, its redundant), 75% of Orgo left (flash cards anyone?) and 10% Chem. left (a lot, I mean a lot of reviewing here!). I haven't even thought of QR yet.... though I'm not worried about that as much. I am seriously considering taking ADD medication because I think I have it. 😕

How much do you (and everybody else of course) have left?
