DAT Question of the Day
Consider the process shown (pyruvate → acetyl-CoA).
Question:
What vitamin is most involved?
a) Vitamin C
b) Vitamin D
c) Vitamin B
d) Vitamin K
e) Vitamin A
Correct answer: c) Vitamin B (specifically Vitamin B1, thiamine)
Why? This reaction involves a decarboxylation step. Anytime you see oxidative decarboxylation of an alpha-ketoacid (such as pyruvate), thiamine (B1) should immediately come to mind.
For the DAT and OAT, cut through the noise:
• B1 is required for decarboxylation reactions
• It functions as a catalyst in energy production
• It is involved in the decarboxylation of alpha-ketoacids and branched-chain amino acids
This is exactly the level of thinking the exams expect.
