I hate to be the first to say it... you have to retake.

I don't see a 14 in reading getting you anywhere.

But man, you have some amazing stats, great GPA, awesome TS

If you are not willing to retake. I would start by eliminating all the schools that have cut offs...

Indiana has cutoff of 17 for Reading comprehension. So you can eliminate that one (can't remember others) but Make a list of all the schools and start eliminating them. Once you checked every school and eliminated all of the ones with a cutoff that you don't make then apply to all of the other schools. There is not much more you can do than that if you are not willing to retake.

yeah i would consider retaking it. Since English is your second language, it will be hard to raise RC section, but i think you can definietly improve PAT and QR if you put some time into it. By the way, great TS and gpa

I can understand your frustration. For the time being do nothing, go take a month off and relax.

IMO, its within your right to do a 3rd try. You never know man, I've seen alot of people with 14s and 15s and finally ending up with a respectable score on the RC on their 3rd attempt.... You can get lucky!

Retake it. I didn't get in anywhere (applied to 20 schools that I met cutoffs for) with a 16 RC and I have a 3.8 GPA and 3.7 Sci & strong EC's. If you want to get into dentistry badly, you should reconsider IMO...

Nice total score/gpa. How did you prepare for this exam"breakdown" if you don't mind me asking. Maybe we can diagnose a flaw/cure. As to whether or not you should retake, that's your call. All the best.👍

Sound advice. Just take some time off and relax for now. There's no way to know to what extent those 14s will hurt you, but the last thing you want is to apply with such a great overall package and not get in due to just those scores. Best of luck in whatever decisions you make.

guys i did all i could for those part i did crack the DAT reading , math, math destroyer (3 times ) and i felt iam so ready for math at least ,even more than science !!!!!!! i used to read articles on daily science every f... day and yet u see the result

i used chad videos for general, orgo + dat destroyer and for bio i used dat destroyer #### many question was similar to DAT destroyer ####

from what i've heard those minimum DAT cut offs are kind of flexible, after all its THEIR rules they made it and they can break it... you have an incredible GPA, and your sciences are strong. Don't freak out you'll get in somewhere, just definitely apply to a lot of schools

I hope you know you cant play the card saying English is not my first language. if you want to go by that then believe me & you there are a lot more people then you who's primary language is not English and yet they score reasonably well.

This is really a hard decision. You need to think it over. If you do call schools to find get some advice, i suggest that you take appointment with your state school admission dean FIRST. then when you do call other schools ask the admin(secretary) to transfer you admission counselors or dean of admissions. Dont ask secretaries for advice they say yes for everything.

One more thing.

IF your school gives grades like: A, B+, B, C+, C
then expect your gpa to decrease a lot for every B+ or C+ that you have received.

if your schools gives A, A-, B+, B, B-... your gpa will be the same.

so what should i ask them ?

so what should i ask them ?

When you take an appointment.
-print out your transcript and highlight all the biology, chem & phy courses. -Then also make an official resume.
-Copy of your dat scores.

Then ask is 14 in RC lead me to an automatic rejection. if they say ohh well their are a lot of other factors basing decision. Then you ask what is the average RC score of students who are accepted to your univ. could you also tell the low and the high. And the deans are usually nice after the admission cycle all their stress is gone so they will talk to you nicely and give you a sound advice.

Good like my friend.

I can speak from experience I had a score of 16 on rc n wasn't doing higher than 16/17s on crack DAT reading but I still landed a 24 on rc...it's not impossible ...what I did really worked for me. I have applied with a 16 in rc n that was Not a good idea...apparently dental schools really look at the rc score. If u did so well in the sciences u can definately do it again. 14 is just too low n u would waste an app cycle just because of that. Again I didn't have ur gpa but an rc score lower than 17 is bad news..sorry to be harsh...but it's ur decision we can just give u our advice ...goodluck on what u decide n goodluck with the app cycle

my ts was lower than yours...i had a hard time with the admissions because of my overall so perhaps your better off...i would call A LOT of schools and ask them if they have cut offs and what not or if you think u can raise it then retake. goodluck either way =) hope you do well this coming cycle

if you plan on retake...i will for sure try to help u raise that rc...i struggled with it myself

A) pep talk
B) strategy

If I hadn't had a pep talk with myself during my break I probably wouldn't have done so well n technique is everything...the answers u want are in the passage u just have to find them ...n shorten the Time u have to find them ...if u are truly motivated u can do it but if u honestly feel like u can't then I can't tell u anything ...u knw what ur stats are n u have an awesome gpa

i just called admission of Arizona university and they said they look at everything , especially academic average and total science meaning they look at whole picture

Well, according to this:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=657139

There are only 2 schools that consider RC "Somewhat Unimportant" and those are AZ and USC.... If you have a shot into dental schools, its with those 2.

You should contact both schools and make sure to make yourself MOST competitive with them (Shadowing hours, volunteering hours, great ECs, Even if they give you the slightest hint of favoritism for research ~yep you gotta get involved with that too).... The idea is, you wanna be a "perfect" candidate at either school.

Isn't AZ one of the dental schools that LOVE massive volunteering hours?

ohh iam sorry but u are wrong nyu ( new york university also said same thing they dont reject me just because of low score on reading when there are many good thing in my package !!! they said they look at everything first aa and ts

What's the difference? My school uses A, B, C, D system, no +/-.. Will my GPA be the same?

well... I hate to use predents.com as a source of statistics, but according to this:
http://www.predents.com/index.php?page=search_results&school_id=16&cycles_form[]=2011&cycles_form[]=2010&cycles_form[]=2009&cycles_form[]=2008&cycles_form[]=2007&cycles_form[]=2006&all_cycles=true&gpa_1=4&gpa_2=0&gpa_3=0&gpa_sci_1=4&gpa_sci_2=0&gpa_sci_3=0&dat_aa_score=30&dat_ts_score=30&dat_chem_score=30&dat_ochem_score=30&dat_bio_score=30&dat_pat_score=30&dat_rc_ltgt=lt&dat_rc_score=14&dat_qr_score=30&form_user_name_type=is&dir_page=search_results&action=new_search

From year 2006-2011 (6 cycles) ... NYU only accepted approx 10 students with 14 RC or lower.... I wouldn't call these odds "favorable"

Unfortunately, when I did the same search for ASDOH, it only returned 9 members. USC only returned 7.

Obviously, predents.com isn't the best source of this sort of information, but it should give you an idea of how hard it is going to be with RC 14.

But its like going to do dentistry in france but not wanting to learn french when the entire curriculum will be in french... I would think french dental schools would want their dentists to be able to do well on a language exam in that case too.

The DAT RC isn't even about if you can speak the language or not... it's about if you can handle and comprehend a lot of information presented to you in a very short amount of time (in english). Dental school will throw a TON of information at you... and its your job to take it all in. Doing well in RC shows dental schools that you will be able to handle this...

Well.. shareshab has 90 days to think about the retake given that there is a 90 day wait period between DATs... I think the earliest date for him to retake would be end of june / start of july...

Your initial stats get you in the interview. At this point they will look further into the stats. Then you'd have some explaining to do but its one section don't fret over it., intervew well and have a good explanation for it.

I just spoke to the admissions people at my school and this is pretty much what they told me.

I got rejected from NYU and USC without an interview with a 3.5/22AA/22TS/20PAT/20RC. I mention this, because there is no guarantee in dental school admissions. And yes, I had many good thing in my package.

Yes your gpa is impressive, but the 14 most likely kills all chances.

A 14 is barely scraping the bottom. I hate to be a bummer, but you have to be realistic.

If you really want it, you'll go get it. Take some time off, get yourself together, and soldier your way through the DAT again. You can do it!

Hey I think you can do it. I was struggling with reading during my practice tests too, not even close to finishing half of 3rd passage's questions and getting 60% correct overall. Kaplan taught a method of writing keywords down for each paragraph, but I was writing down too much. Then I realized I needed to focus more on the reading rather than writing the topic sentences and keywords. After realizing that, my time improved SIGNIFICANTLY! but writing down some keywords still help when I needed to refer back to passage for detail questions.
Your GPA is sick and awesome TS, best of luck!!!
