I took the DAT today after rescheduling the test and I think it paid off. My perceptual ability score is pretty terrible but the dental school that I want to go to said they didn't really look at that too much so I didn't even study for it. What do you guys think about this...

PA 15 🙁
QR 19
RC 18
BI 21
GC 19
OC 20
TS 20
AA 19

Competitive?

IMO, I think that PAT mark is going to hurt you...usually if you have one low section, you can make it up by having a high section..someof your sections are either SLIGHTLY above average (20/21)..the rest are just decent scores.

but if you have a great GPA/Extra curriculars..it might be good enough!

WTF!!! since when is 20/21 only slightly above the 17 avg????? Stop being ridiculous, try taking the DAT first and let me know hw easy getting over a 20 in each section is. The OP already called the school he wants to apply to and they dont put emphasis on the PAT. Usually that is the case for most schools, as in low PAT/QR are often times overlooked if the other sections are good.

Haha..thanks for pointing that out. I got a 21 on my section and it was a little over 90%. What are you saying slightly above average..your ridiculous..stop trying to scare people, scoring 18 is slightly above average and scoring 20's is well above average. To the OP, as long as the school doesnt care much about PA then i think you have a solid chance.

thanks guys I hope everything turns out OK...I think if I can get an interview I will be ok

I wouldn't stress it too much, assuming your GPA is competitive you should be ok.

True, 21 is not "slightly" above average. People always underestimate the way the scores are structured. But this is a double-edge sword, considering your 15 is not "slightly" below average either. It's what, 25 or so percent?

Hey twitch 22 ...just wondering which are the school that don't care much about QR and or PAT?

Every time I call to any school to ask about DAT competitive scores....they always answer they look at the overall....which I know it's not true for all of them.

By the way, congrats on your score. And relax and be happy that you are done with the DAT. Being positive is very important....you are not the only student that gets a bad score in just one section....and do't pay attention to negative comments!

Good luck! 🙂

A 15 pat is knowing how to do cube counting and hole punching. And putting C's straight down for everything else.

i don't understand why hole-punching is so easy for everyone. Any other section of the PAT is easy for me except that one....

DO u guys have any suggestions on doing this?

Ok, calm down there lol. Sorry, but we're not all here to blow sunshine and rainbows up people's As*es and only give them praise. People want honest opinions, and that's what I gave. I don't think my comments were anything ridiculous or absurd.

I would say 18 is the average amongst good-standing applicants (DATs that exclude scores around 13 or something). Thus if 17/18 is the average..isn't 20/21 slightly above average? by no means is 20/21 close to something like a 29.

I never said it was easy to score above a 20, nor was I bashing the OP. If you don't have a high GPA, then your DAT can make up for it (but thats on ALL sections). You can live in your LA LA land all you want, but achieving high scores on all sections is pretty much required if you don't have a good GPA.

Dang, that's a lot of grief to give someone about their opinion.

Oh, and to the OP, just nail those interviews and you'll be in for sure.

good score
pat is a little low, but i've heard some schools don't care about pat section anyway...

i think i have to jump in and also agree that if you're comparing yourself with 'accepted' applicant, then those scores are slightly above avg. (go look at ADEA book yourself, accepted median scores are usually around 18-19 for most schools and 20 for some schools like UoP)

but if you're comparing yourself to everyone that is taking DAT, then 17 is the average and you're well above average on that scale.

they are good scores as long as your stats are good to back it up, but it's not something that will catch people's eyes IMO

I don't think you understand how DAT scoring is structured. For example, if you get 5 questions out of 20 wrong on the chemistry section, you'll get a 19. But if you get 3 questions wrong, you get a 22. If you get 2 wrong, you get 25, and one wrong, you get like 27. There's not really a way to get a hole lot in between 20 and 30. But the difference between a 20 and a 18 is huge, like 7 questions difference. It's really curved at that peak to make people who know everything really stand out. A 20 is like a 90th percentile, not slightly above average. It's not linear or directly proportional.

Oh wow, that's news to me. I thought the curve was based on percentiles(like, how well/bad the rest of the people did), so if everyone gets 1 wrong and you get 5 wrong, you'll score poorly like a 1 or something..not get a 19?

So do they look at what percentile you're in or your actual scores out of 30?

20/21 is slightly above the avg. ppl accepted I agree, but that statement right proves that a 20/21 will give you a good chance of getting in. If your slightly above the accepted numbers then your golden. Right? OP was looking at his chances compared to other applicants then 20/21 well above the 17 avg.

Like I said, take the DAT first and then tell me how "avg." a 20/21 in a sections is.

Only the standard scores (out of 30) are reported to dental schools.
