I am soooo happy to be done. but I'm really mad about my QR score. QR would always be my lowest score in all the practice exams so I knew it was going to be low but not this low!!!! Anyways I want to go to Stonybrook I have a 3.82 gpa and 3.9 science. Any opinions would be helpful.

PA-21(92.2%)
QR-16(52.2%) I HATE THIS
RC-20 (72.4) (I honestly thought I did much better than this)
BIO-22(95.7%)
GC-23(95%)
OC-26(98.1%)
TS-24 (99.3%)
AA-21(93%)

Honestly all I can say is that for me the practice tests in the sciences from topscore, kaplan, achiever, were nothing like the real dat. The highest score I scored in topscore for any of the three sciences was a 20 yet look at my actual scores. GC was ridiculously easy and bio was ridiculously hard. Bio is definitely not comparable to any of the questions you've seen during practice. I went over destroyer twice and I didn't find one question that remsembled my actual questiosn. I thought orgo was harder than GCHEM on dat but I did better so I don't know what to say about that. Overall I'm really happy with my scores except for that 16 in QR!!! Do you think my high science scores will offest that bad qr score?? Do I have a chance at Stonybrook (ny resident btw)?

First off, congratulations on the great scores.

You shouldn't have anything to worry about with the lower QR score as your scores in the other sections more than make up for it. The only problem you may run into is if a specific school required a minimum for that section. I don't think they would set this value at or above 16 but you can never be too sure. My advice is to check with your top schools on this.

I do hope you post a detailed report on how you pulled this off!

I'm specifically wondering how you had such a low QR score? This section seems to take down a lot of otherwise stellar DATs. Did you just not study for it? How did you study for QR and what do you feel you should have done differently?

Thanks.. and great job once again.

I think you did great. chances of stonybrook I'm unsure as I don't know what stats they are looking for.

If you're asian I'd make a quip about your math score. 😀

Since you have the test fresh in your mind.

Can you tell me whether the answers on the math are ordered from smallest to largest.

Kaplan says this is how its set up and they suggest picking choice B to test it out then if too high you know its A for their whole back solving strategy

But when do math destoryer, and crack dat math. there is no order. Its random.

I actuall spent a lot of time on qr. I did a cdm practice test every day for ten days and i reall do recomend cdm because it helps you a lot with time. I started cdm getting 16's and then I got up to a 20. Topscore I would get 21. I went over destroyer twice. Needless to say spent a lot of time but questions on dat are almost all word problems. They were were difficult and My techique in cdm was to mark most of the word problems and hen go back to them but I literally marked about 20 problems. My best advice is to just practice practice practice. Another thing that annoyed me was that I memorized every single math formula you could think of and I needed only two formulas. Area of cylinder and triangle. Did not have to use any of the trig identities. I had about 7 probablity questions also and I just suck at probability. I will post a break down soon.

What type of biology questions did you find to be the hardest? (not specifics, just the subject matter) And did you find there to be a number of questions on one topic like plants, taxonomy, hormones, etc?

Why do people always say Asians are good at Math? Every asian I know sucks at math. I'm white/jewish and i'm pretty damn good at math....stop stereotyping and being ignorant.

I'm asian and I stink at math. Well for the DAT at least. I just need 5 more to 10 more minutes and I can do well. Time is my enemy.

Anyhow it is just something to laugh about judging from the rest of her scores.

In GENERAL, asians are better than other race at math.
In my university, all the top scores on midterms and finals are asian.
Everyone knows this. That's why you see other race approach asians in math classes to get help.

Lol!!! Oh my god...you asians are so funny sometimes.

What would you do for BIO since you didn't see anything from your practice on the actual DAT?

In general we asians are just plain better at everything we do. Of course there are exceptions, but in general we pwn.

Anyway, great job, predentgal! Sure the QR could be better but you did spectacular on all the other sections that actually matter... =P With your GPA you look to be in great shape for the app cycle.

You should go ahead and apply...not like you're gonna potentially waste a whole year b/c of the most worthless part of the DAT...all your other stats are way above average so that more than compensates. Assuming you've got good EC's and dental experience you should be golden 👍.

So did the bio questions like where are ribosomes made? But instead of asking it directly they give some scenarios or something?

Really? Who is winning all of the Nobel Prizes? Well I should say "most" of them. In your face!!!

...don't be dumb.

Hmmm. Ok. I think Asians, from Asia, who now live in the US, in general, are better at math. Is that safer to say? And that's because their schooling systems move through math faster. Also the people who move here often work in the high-tech/engineering field, where good math backgrounds are a qualification.

However, Asians, in general, make some of the best ethnic food. Whether it's authentic Asian food like dim sum, or food like Panda Express. I like 'em both.

The mau5 caught my eye, good taste!

I would like to point out that it is in the nature of Asian culture to maintain high academic standards. Asian culture doesn't emphasize on risk taking. Going with your gut and taking a chance with something never heard of before, like Nobel Prize-worthy research, is not something Asian parents teach their children (very unfortunate).

It's as if the range of "success" for Asian community is smaller (5-9), but considerably high average. Range of "success" for Caucasians is larger and perhaps lower average than Asians (2-10), but much more likely to get the 10s. If you want to get the absolute best, chances are it's going to be a white. If you want to get the very decent, chances are it's going to be an asian.

Just my 2 cents. No offense to anybody, it's just what I've seen from my perspective 🙄

perhaps I should have included [/sarcasm] at the end of the first part of my post, but I thought it was hyperbolic enough not to be taken seriously. Really, in this day and age who actually believes in those stereotypes -_-

Yao Ming sure doesn't believe in stereotypes. I'm not sure about the Asian guy in The Hangover though.

I got a 16 in math also but did well in everything else. I've spoken about this to dental schools shown them my resume and have heard nothing but encouragement. Its scary though since a 16 is quite low, but your other stats/grades easily make up for it. Just be thankful the 16 was in math and not RC or PAT, because that would be a whole different story. Anyways I think your in great shape! Hope this helps

first of all congratulations on your scores. You did extremely well and i won't worry too much about the QR section. You can always e-mail or call stonybrook and ask them if you should retake because of your QR score.
good luck and enjoy the rest of your summer

Your stats are very solid. I had a friend in the same boat as you---great scores but terrible math score that lowered his average; he got into school during the first wave of acceptances. I dont know Stonybrook's reputation but your gpa is very good and your scores are above 90% of school's accepting average, so i would say you should have nothing to worry about. Just make sure you have observation hours and volunteering on your resume and I dont foresee any problems.
