I plan on taking the DAT on June 26 and turning in my application around the same time so that way when the DAT scores get to AADSAS/TMDSAS they are ready to send my file out. Only problem is that I still have to take a Biochem class. Should I take it over the summer (June 6-July7) and take my DAT mid July, or just stay on plan and take the Biochem class in the Fall semester? Will taking the class in the Fall hurt my chances more than applying late?

Take Biochem in the Fall. Have a solid amount of time to study for the DAT and applying early should be your top priorities. Schools will be fine with you taking biochem in the Fall as long as its complete before you begin D-school.

You can easily manage to do both at the same time. That would be my advice. I think it's a huge waste of time to spend an entire summer solely studying for the DAT.

you can take biochem in the fall or spring. Schools won't judge your entire application based on the existence of a single course.

If you feel like you can't juggle DAT + biochem in the same time, I'd suggest you focus on DAT first (DAT = highest priority)

Man cannot serve 2 masters.

Focus on the DAT and take biochem later. Most applicants apply junior year before they have taken biochem.

Try and see if its offered second semester of the summer? If not think about it this way. You can put off biochem until next semester, the longer you put off the DAT the longer your application waits and the less your chances of being accepted are.

Do that if you're as smart as Maygyver.

More common breeds of Homo sapiens may find it difficult to study for the DAT and take classes at the same time. I know I did.

Innguuuuuuu Have you started DS yet? You can't change to "dental student" without starting hehe :meanie:

Hmmm....weird. I don't remember doing that. I must have been playing around with it really late some night. Thanks for the heads up.

haha, I'm not that smart! But seriously, I found it useful to take a full load and study for the DAT. I think if I had only set aside time for the DAT I would have just slept all day and not done anything. Take courses, or a course will keep you in the working mode. It's all up to you though. If you think it will be impossible for you, don't jeopardize your score. I admit that I did take an easier load that quarter as far as the course material, I think it was just 15 or 17 credit hours: evolution, nutrition (I think) and a couple psych courses.

In reference to this, you should try swapping out the biochem for maybe just 1 or 2 electives you still need? This way in the fall you can dumb down your schedule then and take biochem since it tends to be a lot of work and you are freeing up time.

Mmmm I'll disagree on this one. I started studying for the DAT last week and I'm not going to start my post-bacc until the Fall. I'd love to see how well I can truly do on the DAT if I study for 2.5 months straight everyday, and spending the last .5 months doing nothing but practice exams. That's just me though. I'm pretty sure Maygyver is smarter than I.

i did it. I took Drugs and Behaviour (an upper level psych course) and physics while I studied for the DAT.

I would take the DAT and summer school together if I wasnt working 40 hrs a week.
Working 10 hrs a day + studying for the DATs + taking Biochem in a 4 week session = Failing at it all.
I think Ill work and study for the DAT now and take Biochem in the fall as its not offered in summer 2 🙁 What do you guys think?

Ah. 40 hours of work would make that super tough/impossible. I would just push it off then as long as you will graduate on time.

DOES ANY ONE KNOW SOME OF THE EASY UPPER DIVISION SCIENCE CLASSES TO TAKE. jUST DONE WITH MY PRE-REQS AND KNOW THAT BIOCHEM IS TOUGH. TRYING TO BALANCE THE SCIENCE COURSES WITH NON SCIENCE ELECTIVES. HOW WAS THE DRUG AND BEHAVIOR COURSE.
THANKS

Easy upper division science classes? You gotta be kidding with me 😱

Upper division bio are pretty easy and will prepare for DAT (evolution, ecology, animal diversity)

Yes... the easiest upper level bio courses are:
Biochemistry
Microbiology (come on, its got "micro" in title, can't be that hard)
Physiology (preferably same one offered by medical school)
Pharmacology (piece of cake, whats 450 drugs memorized for a final?)
Gross anatomy (bones? thats a TV show)
Immunology (you catch a cold, then you feel better, how bad can it be?)

anything else is is basically hard biology
