DAT prep Material

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Having trouble with formal charges can somone explain with examples. Much apperciated.

what is the best material to buy in order to prepare for the DAT? (ie. books, cd's) i am a freshemen, when should i start to study for it?

Your chem and bio books would be the best place to start. Then your ochem books.

MASTER the subject material now. It will be so much easier if you do that. Put in the work and ask the questions you need to. Take the DAT during winter break of your third year after taking biochem and you will be solid. Then you just have to shadow and work on letters of reccomendation or you could attempt to do research, shadow and keep the grades up. That's the best advice I can give.

As a freshmen, I think right now DAT should be a secondary priority. If you were my sibling or close friend, I would say first of all have fun and enjoy college and concentrate on doing well in your classes and learning the material. Dont let the DAT ruin your life already.

However, I feel the best study material, at least for the science topics, was the DAT Destroyer. It was by far my best test prep. It cover all the topic at what seemed greater depth than the actual test.

Not sure why the quesiton is on this board but I guess your new to SDN so welcome. (In the future if you have a quesiton just post a new thread or put it in a thread relevant to your question) Anyhow....

Formal charges are easy: You take the group number - (1/2 # shared electrons + # unshared electrons)
For example if we want to calculate the formal charge on the B of BH4 .... Group 3 - (4+0) = FORMAL CHARGE OF -1

As a freshman, i would say the best way to prep for the DAT would be, if possible, gear your courses towards the material that will be covered on the DAT, this makes studying for the DAT much less demanding as you will inherently be studying for the DAT while you study for your classes. Its a little trick i learned this year as a sohphomore taking it it 16 hours...advanced courses that go more in depth than intro bio like human physiology, genetics, immunology, ochem, and gen chem, (the latter two you are going to take anyway for prereqs) will definately help you in the nat sci portion of the exam. as for when you get closer, i'd suggest practice exams, lots and lots of practice exams. by taking practice exams you can get a feel for what you know and what you dont know and spend more focus on the areas you're not satisfied with. but dont fret about it too much, its only your freshman year so unless you plan on graduating early you'll have plenty of time.
