i am a graduated hygienist of 2004. i have to say i don't remember a lot about the gen chem and even organic chem class that i have taken as pre rec's for acceptance into hygiene the program when i applied 2002. i am want to apply to be a dentist and lack physics 1 and 2, organic chem 2, and bio chem. i am wondering if i should go back and repeat all my science courses to be able to perform well on the DAT, or is there a course book, program, class ect..... that can help me preform well on DAT so i don't have to waste time and money on classes i have already taken but just cant remember a lot of the content.
thanks for suggestions🙂

Some schools require the prerequisite courses be taken within a certain amount of years. So you may not qualify because it has been 8+ years since taking those science courses. It really depends on the school though. I would contact the schools that you are interested attending and ask them if they have a limit regarding how long ago prerequisite courses were taken. Some of the schools I am applying to require that the prereqs be taken within the past 5 years....so again it depends on the school.

As far as DAT prep materials there are numerous. You'll find various in the Dental DAT forum of sdn but of the top of my head I can think of Barron's book, Kaplan book, Top Score Pro prep tests, Chad's videos, DAT qVault, DAT achiever...there are so many more. Good luck!

if you have to retake those science classes because of them being too old, then do that of course. But whatever you do, do NOT feel the need to spend $1400 on a Kaplan prep course, it doesnt help enough. It helps, but just not quite enough if you wanna score 19 or 20+ on all sections. So I'm retaking my DAT using Chads videos, DAT destroyer, and Cliff's AP Bio, and using my Kaplan resources for my prep course because i still have access to it, such as the practice tests. You need practice tests for sure, but you can find them cheaper elsewhere like Topscore or Achiever software. Good luck! 🙂

Shouldn't those comments have given you a clue? Forgetting for the moment the age of your courses, you may want to keep in mind that the content of the "chemistry" courses you took for your dh program is unlikely to have been at the level of those required for majors/pre health professionals.

I had been away from gen chem and o chem for a few years before I took my DATs just used review books. It certainly wasn't easy trying to remember stuff. But 10 years is heck of a long time. I'd retake those classes.

I recommend using the DAT Destroyer books. I used kaplan for my first test and did mediocre. 2nd time around I used Destroyer and it was perfect. Its all multiple questions and in the answers it goes into detail as to why each possible answer is wrong or correct. It was really helpful because some questions asked in the book came up on the test and wouldn't have gotten them right had I not used the book.
