Hey everybody,

I am new to SDN, and I just took the DAT today (yesterday now). I am really late on getting the application process underway. I will be filling out apps for the next few days and I know i have missed most of the early timeframes. Heres my stats:

PA 20 (88.1)
QR 23 (95.9)
RC 18 (39.0)
Bio 18 (65.1)
GC 22 (89.5)
OC 21 (87.6)

TC 20 (85.8)
AA 20 (85.1)

Chemistry Major/math minor
GPA 3.30 Science GPA ~3.5 Chem GPA ~3.9

PROS:
plenty of GOOD recomendations from professors(3+ chemistry & 1 math)
1 sem of undergrad research and will do it again for 2 more semesters
VP of ACS chapter, and I will be a member of the pre-dent club this year
1 year of math tutoring/1 year chem lab asst./next year chem tutoring

CONS:
have NOT done shadowing, but I have talked to one who will let me this year
Also, my first semester of college was F 2002 and I will graduate in S 2008. 😳
First several years I made alot of B's & C's and W's w/ no A's, but about 2 years ago, I got serious about school and have gotten a 4.0 almost every semester since.

Anyway, I know the RC score is terrible but many of the questions were subjective (I actually thought I did really well when I finished the section). Also, Bio wasn't very good but I pretty much had to neglect studying for everything else just to get an 18!

Can you guys give me some idea of how competitive I might be?

Schools like upward trend. Further your DAT score is really decent. Some dental school favor DAT scores over GPA (Columbia, UNVL...) You should do some research on which dental school preferred DAT scores

Holy crap, looks like a rough bio and RC section. Great scores though! I'm sure you'll get into dental school.

I'm just throwing this out here when I say you have a fighting chance. I urge users to not give false hope and say things like "you're DEF. in". Comments like this give a false sense of comfort and may cause too much confidence in interviews. You guys may laugh but it does happen. There are many people with stellar stats that don't get in for other reasons. Overall though, you do have a fighting chance. Good luck.

I was reading my above post again and I laughed. It sounds a little like those clearasil commercials or axe body spray commercials with their disclaimers and their "may cause too much confidence" lines. Just got a laugh out of it 🙂.

Those are solid scores. Nothing under 18 and 20/20 TS/AA. You should have a good chance considering you have a good gpa and solid LOR's, although your lack of dental experience might prohibit you from getting an interview. adcoms want to know that you are completely devoted to becoming a dentist. It is late for applications but not too late. good luck, and get that application out TODAY!

No offense, but I don't think you have a good chance at getting any interviews without at least a little experience. If I were you I would honestly quit whatever job you are doing and volunteer in a dental office for 2 weeks, get 80 hours of experience and tack it on your application. Even if it is late going out.....

You're in. Welcome to the dental school. You'll be a dentist in 3 or 4 yrs 😀😀😀😀

Well, even if you are set on dentistry as your career, you should most definately get as much exposure as you can. You should shadow in a general practice setting and assist if you can. One part of the application that many students overlook is that admissions committees are now becoming more and more selective with the increased volume of candidates. Not only does exposure set you apart from other applicants, it gives you an opportunity to comment about dentistry in an interview. Most importantly, you need to make sure that dentistry is a career that you truly have a passion for. You do not want to waste $250k on an education that will become an unsatisfying career.

wow great scores!! especially your QR!! how did you study for that section? what materials did you use?
Good luck!!!! 🙂🙂
