DAT Scores, I should probably retake right?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Fortunately, the 16 you received fell in QR and is not an automatic "disqualifier" by any means. That being said, you should probably retake. Your scores give you a chance, just not a good/great chance.

What's your GPA like?
When did you hope to apply?

Updated the thread. Im a senior and i know im going to be taking a gap year regardless.

GPA is solid, DAT is average/slightly below. What did you use to prepare?
Cliffs for Bio, My ochem and chem notes from school, tweaked it a bit by watching chad's videos. I have destroyer and mathdestroyer but only did a couple of problems out of it. Used Bootcamp too.

Did you go through all of Chad's quizzes for chem and ochem? Did you use all the Bootcamp tests and thoroughly study your mistakes? And an 18AA isn't bad and a 16QR won't kill you.

I know that you prepared for the DAT while taking classes. If you plan on retaking, would recommend during this winter after your finals (while the material is still fresh) or next summer (where you'll have more time to study).

I would also recommend you going through Destroyer thoroughly for this retake; it doesn't look good for anyone if their scores don't show significant improvement on the 2nd attempt.

You had both the DAT and Math Destroyer, why didn't use it?

People say 18 is average but I think 18 isn't competitive anymore. I feel like you need at least 19.. 20 is better of course.

I'm not too familiar with the system in US, but from what I can tell I would rewrite. Your score is by no means terrible, but I think with a higher score you could be even more competitive!

However, you're probably pretty burned out. Taking the DAT during school is no joke (trust me I know, that's why I'm not writing the Canadian DAT this november lolol)

I would just sit tight for now, kill your coursework, and just find enjoyment in life outside of a "dental school" context. Enjoy your last year of undergrad.

Then next cycle when it comes time to rewrite, go HAM.

I literally had less than a month to wrap stuff up. I was also in school and had 6 midterms scattered through out September. There was 4-5 questions that was near identical to the problems in math destroyer, but I completely forgot how to do it 🙁 I truly regret not doing destroyer.

i think your biggest mistake was not using DAT destroyer and math destroyer. People think its "overkill". these same people also tend to not do as well on the DAT. Are both materials time consuming and difficult? absolutely. however, if you're looking to get a high score, DAT destroyer and math destroyer are the silver bullet. if you retake and use these materials, you can get whatever score you want. good luck you can do this!

I have a friend who had both Destroyer books but opted for the 2000$ kaplan course. he did not do very well on the DAT and lost a bunch of money. he also did not use the $150 destroyer books he paid for. only you can determine the score you get, in the end its how you study. Use destroyer, i cant speak any higher of it. tried and proven material right here

So If do both destroyer ~three times, I should be good?

There is no set rule for the number of times you need to complete the Destroyer. I do highly suggest you use the most up to date version and avoid taking the DAT until you feel very comfortable with the level of work in both the DAT and Math Destroyer.

Please feel free to PM and I will be more than happy to give you some advice.

I am working on Nancy's Study Guide for the DAT now and you can be one of the first to critique it. As you know from my post I am not a fan of study guides so this will be a very adaptable to your style and schedule.

Wishing you the best..

when doing destroyer, dont just burn through the questions. understand the concepts and where you made your mistakes. learn from them. This is why doing the book 2-3 times can help. but only if you put in the time and actually learn from it. Mindlessly running through the book and guessing wont get you anywhere. the people who pulled off high scores with destroyer put in a lot of time and effort to learn from the book. this is why it is such a crucial tool. Dat destroyer is what you make of it. that being said, it is the best prep material on the market

wat is your study guide?

DUDE NU!!!!! Ik you wanted to do well and I feel so sad for you! You seemed to be pretty active with your studying. Hey your GPAs blow mine out of the water. If I don't get in this cycle and bomb my last semester and you do well on a retake you're much better off than I am ^_^. Sorry I wasn't here sooner to offer my condolences. Hey, the main destroyer is essential. If you're getting a 16 in QR, math destroyer could feel overwhelming. Focus on speed and getting the easy questions right and your QR will shoot up easily.

Just to lift your spirits here are my scores and I just got an interview. I think you still have a shot to get in. I think if you have to take the dat again more time on chads videos and your chem would go up.

Hey,
Your stats isn't that bad, you have a good GPA. There are schools that will be looking for people like you. if had the scores you had, I would have had an interview somewhere by now. If I were you, I would apply to one or two schools and see what happens. It's not really late. Don't waste a year just because you are looking for a 20 or greater. apply, if they say NO, then you can retake the dat next time. I know people who have gotten in with lower dat/stats than yours. Trying will only cost you 395 box for two schools.
