how often do residents date colleagues within their own specialty? how about dating outside their specialty, ie other residents/physicians from their institution?

Both happen all the time. There are a lot of residents who say they would never date someone within the program, and then you see them together with another. I think everybody has to make their own decision on it. Personally, I doubt I could ever do it, but it does make for nice schedules and similar lifestyles. But if you have a bad breakup, uh oh.

It happens. I married someone in my department (as a grad student). But you may want to check and see if the hospital has "rules" about who can date. IE: dating someone who evaluates you or whom you evaluate is a no-no. And, obviously, don't date your patients!

It's nice and easy because it's so convenient, but as yaah already stated, if there's an ugly breakup...watch out.

Be careful with dating within your department or residency program. I have seen it happen including the inevitable nasty breakups. One call night, a senior ended up with two of his ex-girlfriends covering two floors. The three hated each others guts so much that patient related communication suffered. Not good.

Dating someone outside of your department is a-OK. I hooked up with a resident from a different service (and eventually married her).

- can't date medstudents while they are on your service
- can't date nursing/tech students period
- can date grown up nursing staff, PT's etc.

why can't you date nursing students?

> why can't you date nursing students?

Because you can get yourself fired from your residency without much recourse.

Emphasis on the word 'student'. While you are not in a position to evaluate these students, it makes very bad PR for the hospital if you knock up some 18 year old farm beauty who ventured into the big city to become a nurse.

Definitely agree with the first two. Not 100% sure about the third, though. It seems like a nasty breakup with someone on the nursing staff could put you in a bad place. I'm just envisioning a call night with q5" pt updates from a not so happy ex taking care of one of your patients.

i'm confused...why can you date a med student, but not a nursing student?

I wouldn't date either one...just too dangerous if something goes wrong (and more than likely, it will).
