quick question to more students who have gone through all of their clinicals...I have a wedding on a friday afternoon coming up and I am in the wedding party (a few hours away). I just started a new rotation and was wondering if I should ask the director if I can have the day off and offer to make it up, or if I should just call out sick and avoid a) him saying no and me getting into a sh***y situation and b) having it affect my clinical eval. what do you guys think? any advice would be appreciated.

Most of these people are human. I would have emailed the site beforehand, but at this point I would explain I'm in the wedding party and would offer to make up the day. For most of these requests I've had people have been reasonable. I haven't heard of my peers being told no, either.

Don't lie. Just ask them that you are a guest in a wedding party on a specific day and was wondering if you could miss just one day of your rotation. They'll let you go for a wedding and either let you make it up on an extra weekend day or just shove it under the carpet.

Just be honest and ask. I haven't had any problems with it before (although YMMV).

you should contact your rotation director to get permission. The doc you work with likely won't care but if it gets back to the school they may. You should have informed the rotation director far in advance as I'd be surprised if you just found out about this.

Thanks for your input, appreciate it. I would have asked earlier but the rotation was under construction and didn't know who the site director was until recently. I am on outpatient clinic that week so at least I won't be missing call etc. I'll probably just ask, but a little worried he'll punt and have me ask the school (at which point theyll say no, as it is in our handbook that time off is not permitted for other people's weddings).

They probably won't make you ask the school. Just ask the guy nicely.

At my school, the clerkship directors will almost always say no if it's a wedding but if you ask the attending/residents they're always ok with it. Be up front with your attending and you should have no problems.

Thanks for the advice guys. Asked and was told it wouldn't be a problem. Feel much better than having to call out sick (even though maybe it'll affect my eval).

Getting sick on a Friday when you looked just fine the day before?

That would hurt your eval more than asking for a day off for a wedding.
