Hello,

Just seeing if any new DDS out there has encountered this and found an answer. I am waiting for a call back from my local DEA rep, but maybe someone already has the answer.

The new policy for DEA licenses is that you must have a practice location address associated with your DEA license (and application). I.e., a home address is unacceptable.

The complication for me is, I have no practice location (I am seeking employment), yet, I am getting set up with a dental temp agency to do temp work, and many of the possible locations would prefer a dentist with a current DEA license. So, I am in a catch-22 of sorts: I need a DEA license to get the job, but need a job to get the DEA license. The address must be the place, or a place, where I would dispense the drugs.

The national hotline rep said to use a location address that I might potentially work at, but this seems too...risky, or otherwise unwise.

Anyone been in a similar situation (this is a new policy, you used to be able to use your home address)?

The annoying thing is that I usually use Motrin for extractions, etc., anyway ;-)! Any ideas would be helpful, and I will post the explanation I get from the local rep when (if) I get it.

Here is the applicable link (for "locum tenens" or temping):

Typically, you would start working at a dental office before you file for your DEA number. The senior doctor or other associates can help you prescribe meds for your patients until your DEA number arrives (usually 3-4 weeks). Once it arrives, it's valid for 3 years and you won't have to worry about going through this process again.

It's not a requirement to practice dentistry with a DEA number, but it will make your life easier for post-op pain management for patients you see.
