Anyone ever call dea ppl the toll free number they give you puts you on hold for >20 min and have never gotten human on other side.

DEA number does come in the mail. It took nearly 3 months to get mine and the wait on the phone was obnoxious, but I was able to eventually get to an actual person each time (who ended up being completely useless, but what would you expect from the fed gov).

DEA certificate is issued online AND a copy comes in the mail. I've applied for mine 4x now (once in residency, twice in fellowship due to an initial free one and then conversion to a paid one, once as an attending), and have always gotten it in less than 2 weeks. One time they had a question about my application, sent me an email the morning after I applied, I responded immediately and they issued it two hours later (online) with a physical certificate coming 2 business days after that. It is by far the most responsive part of the whole licensing cascade that I've ever had the pleasure to interact with.
That said, I've never tried to call them, so I have no tricks there.

Ive called them before. I just put my phone on soeakerphone while I charted, so the wait wasn't that annoying. Maybe the hold music was decent?
Like the others, I found it hasn't taken that long to get my new card. It updates online quickly. I've moved a few times now and it usually take a couple weeks to get the new card.

I just re-certified my DEA last week. Logged into my account. Answered "no" to all of the "Have you done any bad things?" questions. Paid fee by credit card. Instantly printed a new DEA card right from my computer. YMMV.

That's a renewal. It does take up to a couple weeks if you change information (particularly your address).
