Hi. I know I'm not the only one going through this so I just wanted some thoughts. I applied to 10 schools and it's now the last day of February and I have one interview (coming up soon), 1 official rejection (which came a little over 2 weeks ago), and dead silence from the remaining 8 schools. What gives? I've been checking my online status almost every day and have attempted calling these schools (never a response). I'm assuming I'm rejected from them, but is there a chance that I'm on some waitlist I don't know about? Why can't they just put me out of my misery and formally reject me? I submitted my application in NOVEMBER.

OK...so this turned into more of a vent, but I seriously would like to know everyone's thoughts on this. Is there a chance that I'm still in the running for these schools? I know a lot of schools don't reject until they filled all of their positions, but it seems kind of silly to hold onto 300 applications.

Thoughts???

Thoughts???

Contact the faculty member you applied to work with. I am about to do that for the couple of schools that I haven't heard from, I'd say 6 weeks after the application due date it's fine. However, I'm not clinical and I was in contact with some of these people before I applied, so I feel more comfortable contacting them again.

I just got my second official rejection letter today (UNC-CH), so they're slowly trickling in! 🙄

I think if there's a waitlist, they'd usually notify you though. Sorry I can't be more helpful... it will all be over in a few weeks though, so try to hold out until then! I'm waiting right there with ya 🙂

I've considered E-mailing the POIs I've applied to work with, but I haven't been in contact with them so it might seem out of the blue. Also, I have no idea what to actually say. Should I just say something along the lines of "I am very interested in your research and the program at University X, but have yet to hear back since submitting my application. I understand interview invites have already been extended, but was just wondering if my application is still being considered?" Or is that too... I don't know... pushy/informal.

if you wanna email them, i think what you mentioned should be fine. the only thing, though, is that i think some professors might not even respond.

Well, I just E-mailed 3 of them. I figure I'll see how/if they respond before E-mailing the rest. Haha.

Earlier in the application process when I was getting in contact with some professors, I actually did a "test-run" of e-mails on some of my lower choice schools before e-mailing my higher choice schools.

I've e-mailed a few of my POI's from schools I haven't heard from. My e-mail stated that I'm very interested in working with them and whether they've yet had the opportunity to review my application and if its possible for them to give me an indication of my application's status... I received a nice response from one POI stating that she hasn't received individual applications from the department yet, but it should occur soon and she'll be in touch with me soon. I'd say its worth a try! Good luck guys.

Well, only one of the 3 POIs/schools that I contacted responded so far. She was really nice about it and just said that all interviews had been conducted and she was sorry to bring the disappointing news. After receiving that E-mail, I pretty much went ahead and assumed I'm rejected from the rest because they have also all pretty much interviewed. I know Stony Brook is weird with their interviews so I'm considering still contacting him, but I just don't want to give off a bad vibe since I might re-apply there next time around. I don't know. I think I'll go ahead and do it anyway.

I agree. I emailed 3 POIs sayinng the same kind of thing. That was 2 or 3 weeks ago and I haven't heard a thing. So while you may not hear anything back, it's at least worth a shot. It can't hurt now, and at least you can say you tried!
