Since I'm new at this, I was wondering what are the rules and procedures for accepting and perhaps later declining an offer. Can you accept now, then later decline once you hear from other schools? Do you have until May to hold onto acceptances without committing? Thanks 🙂

I've heard a rumor that MD/PhD programs' magic date is earlier...but the one always thrown around is May 15. Accept everywhere, if you wish, and then you have to narrow it down to one on May 15. You can be on as many waitlists as you want. It is a matter of etiquette, though, that if you really dont want to go to a school, remove yourself from consideration so that you can make some lucky schmuck's day.
Not having this problem so far,

Thanks JayQuah that helps 😀

If the school starts before August 1st, they can force you to hold only one acceptance as of April 15th. MD/PhDs usually pull this off by counting a mandatory summer rotation as starting school. The same policies apply for waitlists etc.

So if the school has this policy, we're not allowed to be accepted to one school, and on the waitlist for another school past April 15th
😕

This is incorrect. You may hold on to as many waitlists as you'd like, for as long as you'd like. However, for those August 1st schools, you must decide to keep or decline your acceptance to those schools by April 15th. If you keep your acceptance, you must decline your acceptances to all others. If you recieve an acceptance off a waitlist before you start at this school, you are free to take the offer (again, you must then decline your stated acceptance to any other schools). The same goes for May 15th schools.

oh what i would give for the opportunity to decline an offer right now
