Hi,

I recently had a middle-author paper that was accepted, and a first-author manuscript that was submitted for peer review. I am wondering if / how exactly I could send an update letter to schools that I have recently interviewed at / received an invitation from. Would it be sufficient to send like a two sentence blurb and attach the accepted manuscript, or would I have to write an extended spiel about what I have been up to / why I am interested in attending that specific school? Also, would be viewed unfavorably to send an update letter only a few weeks after interviewing / receiving an invite?

Every program has a different policy. Ours is up to 4 update emails with at most 1 page PDF. The most meaningful updates are research manuscripts, so congratulations! Do they influence the process for invites and/or acceptances? They do. Accepted manuscripts are never seen unfavorably. Being concise is appreciated. However, it is also valued to show thoughtful match to the strengths/specific investigators of the school. Examine carefully the track record of funding, scholarly work & MD/PhD training of those investigators. Once again be thoughtful, don't ask just Nobel laureates' laboratory, which are typically unlikely to be highly productive for MD/PhD trainees. You need to identify the rising stars who are in need of producing many manuscripts....
