So I am lucky in that I have the pleasure of declining admission to two schools this coming week. My question is bascially how some of you went about telling them. I've been leaning towards a formal letter type format, but a friend of mine said she just sent them a quick email stating she was going there now.

Figured I'd see which would be the best way to go about this.

Didn't they include a form for you to fill out about declining your spot? Minnesota sent me one in my packet and I checked declined and put the reason in the blank.

Negatory!

In fact, one of the schools hasn't sent me any information other than an acceptance letter and a short checklist. And it's been over a month lol

I usually keep it short, about 5 or 6 sentences. I thank then for their offer, and the opportunity blah blah blah. And very politely tell that that unfortunately I have to withdraw my application. Then I thank them again, and close.

They get a lot of these letters, and they always have someone to take your spot so don't feel bad. They know that if you got an offer from them, most likely someone else gave you an offer too. It's the way the game is played.

hey man

cant go to your school. find something better. sorry

just kidding. 🙂

most schools come with a sheet that u need to turn it along with the deposit. on that sheet, they ask u to check off whether you accept or reject the offer. i don't think a formal letter is necessary; a quick email should suffice

IMO, as long as you aren't overly rude, then however you choose to decline their acceptance is OK. They don't worry about your feelings when they're the ones doing the rejecting.

Don't forget to ask for your deposit back 😛

I didn't have the time or inclination to write an extensive formal letter...I just sent a simple email regretfully declining my spot, thanked them for the consideration, and thats it...They always wrote back thanking me and wishing me luck.
