Hey everybody. I was looking for some advice regarding applying to Perio programs. My stats: i'm in the top 25% of my class w/ a 93 on Part I . I do have some extenuating circumstances so read on please. I repeated my first year after failing a class do to a technicality which i wont' bore you with here. Lets just say it wasn't because i lacked any competence, but the bottom line is i have an F on my transcript. Regardless, i repeated first year and now have a gpa which would put me in the tp 10% of the class had it not been for the 2.1 or so i got first year. Considering these circumstances do you think i am strong enough of an applicant to have a decent shot at getting into a program somewhere(assuming i get a 90 or above on Part II), or would my time be better spent completing a GPR and reapplying the following year. More specifically, would it statistically be a waste of time to apply for next year's class. Your opinions are much appreciated. Thanks.

sorry i dont know the answer to your question, but i will tell you this, your Part II boards have no affect on your chances to specialize... unless of course you apply to a residency after graduating from school (rather than during your senior year).

are you in pretty good w/perio at your school? i think you should talk to one of the graduate program residents, professors or director, they should give you an honest assessment
i think the fact that your boards are good and you pulled your rank up considerably from the 1st year should say something, but ya never know
i think you should try anyways!

Perio isn't super competitive to get into so if you don't mind where you go I don't think you'll have any problem at all finding a program.

If you finish in the top 25% and have a part I score of 93, by no means would it be a waste of time to apply. So you screwed up a little, no big deal. It sounds like you've pulled it together nicely and the demonstrated aptitude is there for program directors to see. I know of two people that had to repeat their first year and after getting it together, went on to specialize in pedo. So anything is possible if you've worked hard enough. Although competitive, perio isn't among the most cut throat of specialites. I think you definitely have a solid chance of getting into a program, especially since it sounds like you'll be able to explain the glitch on your transcript. If I had to wager money on it one way or the other, I'd bet on the possibility that you'll get a spot somewhere. Just be sure to apply to enough programs. Best of Luck.
