I'd like to eventually go into private practice and do one on one therapy sessions to adults and adolescents. There are a few good MFT programs around me that would be really convenient, but I don't want to pigeonhole myself as a marriage counselor. Would an MS in counseling be more general? I realize I'd have to get licensed either way.

An MS in counseling is more general than MFT, as is an MSW (in different areas, of course).

From my research, an MSW is the most flexible and respected degree to start with before you go into private practice as an LICSW. You can also enter private practice with an LMHC and a Masters in Education. After you have your generalist degree you can then add clinical focuses such as specializing with grief, addiction,(alchohol, drugs) marriage therapy(LMFT). All of these specialties have additional training but also have additional certifications that can be listed professionally(sign, business card). The requirements vary from State to State so you might want to check that out. It's a long road-Good Luck!
