I am a undergraduate rising senior psychology major looking to apply to grad school for next fall. Currently, my plan is to obtain a masters degree and become a licensed therapist, practice for some time, and then pursue further education if I feel the need. However, I am having trouble determining what type of masters program I should be looking into, as I realize not all degrees allow for licensure as a therapist. Does anyone know which degrees can lead to licensure in Maryland and/or Pennsylvania? This seems like a question to google, but I haven't been able to find a very clear answer in my searches and am feeling a little lost with so many different options. Thanks for the help!

Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling are the three master's degrees that lead to independent licensure as a therapist (unless you want to do something ultra specific, like in school psych or BCBA). SW typically has more options than the other two though that gap seems to be closing, MHC and MFT degree have more coursework in psychotherapy.

Also, you mentioned that you might do more training later. If you're thinking of a doctorate in psych, be advised it's not as typical career path as you might think.

Every MA/MS program should have some info on their website or brochure regarding accreditation and licensure. You can also reach out to the program training director if it feels unclear. What you'll want to avoid are programs like a masters in psychology, which is essentially an academic only degree (e.g., no licensure related curriculum).

And check out respective state boards to see what the requirements will be. Here's one for the MD board that regulates social work licenses.

Good luck!
