I just turned down an MSTP offer in order to go to a MD program. In the long run I didnt think that the dual degree program fit my career goals. It just hurts because I lost full funding and now will instead compile a wonderful debt of 150 g. ouch.

Im happy with my choice. I try not to regret my decisions. I just could not commit to the 8 years in school. To me, I think that it would be way too depressing to finish up your two years of book work, and when all your classmates begin doing the cool stuff, you go and lock yourself in a lab for 3-4-5 years. Eventually I may steer back to research, but I always want my focus to be on clinical medicine.

edogg you probably did the right thing. I love research and after talking to many many m.d/ph.d's they all pointed out that if i wanted to do at least 90% research and only 10% patient care that md/phd would be the way to go. If on the other hand you mainly want to do patient care with *some* research on the side (mostly working with another PI or translational research) then the md would suffice. I will only be applying md next year but will apply to schools that can offer me the opportunity to do research maybe in the first summer or even during the academic year if time permits.
