Hey guys,
I didn't know where else to ask so i'm asking here. It seems i need a deep cleaning. I've been reading it should take abou 45 mintues per quandrant. The doctor i went to said it shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes for one side of the month. I'm just curious if i'm going getting ripped off here.
Thanks ahead of time

John

What your dentist is telling you is that you have periodontal disease. This is different than a regular cleaning in that the root surfaces of your teeth need to be cleaned as well as the crowns like in a "normal" cleaning. This therapy is done to remove the toxins and calculus that is below the gumline that eventually causes people to lose their teeth due bone loss from the bacterial infection. Very important to treat. It won't go away on it's own.

However, you might ask your dentist to explain your condition to you more in detail. Ask him if you have bone loss (he should have used a perio probe to check your gums), and to explain the treatment and your specific level of perio to you so that you understand more fully.

Hope this helps!

The time it takes varies from clinician to clinician and really has very little correlation with how good the treatment is.

Nascar mechanics change 4 tires in about 17 seconds. Walmart does the same job in about 45 minutes. Who do you think is doing the better job. Better skills and better equipment sometimes mean you can do a better job faster.

Treatment time can also depend on the severity of your disease. The fact that your doctor feels this can be handled in under an hour may mean your disease is in the early stages. If that is the case, count yourself lucky.

I really don't think anyone can scale 14 teeth, assuming the dentist is doing one side (upper and lower) in 30 minutes if there's significant periodontal disease. 30 minutes per quad sounds a lot more likely.
