Has anyone here gotten accepted and then deferred or decided to wait for another year? If you did this, did you have problems getting in the following year?

if the school okays your deferral, i dont see how you'd have "trouble" getting in. you'd already be in, they are holding your spot.

i think the more important part is getting a school to allow a deferral. i think you'd have to have a pretty good reason. not just wanting to work another year!

just my 2 cents though! 🙂

LOL.

Yeah a deferral is when a school HOLDS your spot. Meaning you now have year off. and next year, you WILL go to that medical school.

if u attain a deferral, then decide u want to re-apply elsewhere ... is it poss.? or is the deferral legally binding, just curious ...

i doubt its legally binding. what are they going to do, come to your house and force you to attend their school? :scared: 😱 haha.

i would think it is just in extremely poor taste, and you'd lose whatever money you had down. and you never know who knows who, and you could possibly ruin your chances for other things down the road.

but i'm interested to hear from someone who actually knows the answer to this, not just my opinion

It has happened, which is why it is difficult to get an acceptance differed until the following year. You would def lose the deposit. It would be hard for a school to know if u applied elsewhere, since they would have no way of accessing your primary application and I doubt anyone in an admissions office is going to take the time to call around to other schools on a whim to see if you applied. I mean, we are dealing with the same group of people that take up to 2 weeks to return an e-mail/phone call at times...doubtful that are gonig to be motivated enough to call around to their buddies at other schools.

tha's what i was thinking. thanks.

As the OP, I guess I should clarify. I know what a deferral is. My 1st choice school only allows for a deferral under extreme medical reasons. So, actually I would be looking at going through the application process all over again.
I guess my question was, has this been done and were people successful in being accepted again the following year? (as long as you followed the proper steps for withdrawing your acceptance the first time).

I think it depends on WHY you wanted to defer (or turn down an acceptance, depending on how the school looks at it).

you havent made yourself clear OP. why do you want to defer? why did you apply this cycle if you don't want to go in the fall?

i'm guessing you don't have a medical reason, or anything extreme enough to fall under the rules. so why, oh why would you give up your spot?!

if you were just as competitive the next year, they may accept you, but they also may wonder why you didnt come last year. they may think you picked a "better" option and it fell through.

I just have to say, why did you waste your time and money if you dont want to go to medical school next year? If they only defer under extreame conditions and you just want to give up your spot then you must not have a good reason for deferment. This reminds me of this girl that I work with that applied to a bunch of DO schools but then decided she wants to be a PA after getting accepted to a few of the DO schools. There is nothing wrong with that except it doesnt make sence to place time and effort into something you dont want to do. I almost feel like if people that dont want to go this year or ever should stop wasting the adcoms time which in turn wastes time and spots for people like me. I am not mad, so dont think this is a rant, but why?

im guessin its cuzz it serves as an insurance policy ... fill in the blanks ...

Allow me to clarify. When I applied for medical school this year, I had every intention of starting in 2007. I have great respect for the admissions department and did not intend to waste thier time. I am very grateful to have been accepted.
I am a non-trad student and work in the healthcare field currently. The organization I work for has recently restructured and has undertaken some major projects with my direct involvement.
The chief medical officer and CIO have made me a very tempting offer which would benefit me both financially and professionally as I pursue my medical degree.
They have asked me to consider staying on an additional year. In turn, they would continue to support me financially including benefits during my time in medical school. This is a very strong offer and I must consider it. It is essentially like a service scholarship with time served beforehand instead of after.
I in no way intended to be disrespectful to the application process or to those who are still waiting to hear.

run with it dude.

What a great opportunity! It seems like a logical reason to defer. Have you contacted the school and told them about your opportunity. They may - since there is still plenty of time to fill your spot - be willing to work with you on it. I don't see how talking to them about it could hurt. I know someone who defered to complete a research project they were working on. Good luck.

Sounds like a GREAT opportunity...I'd at least explore my options...

But, make SURE you get the deal in writing in the form of a solid contract that will ensure they hold up their end....I have a bad habit of not trusting anyone, particularly when it comes to money and 'promises" made by an employer.
